1981 impala <> to live and die in l.a.

ive been watching this car for years but never approached the owner because he was rumoured to be anal about his cars.

last week i said lets see whats up and drove to his place and ended up buying 2 vehicles.
this 1981 chevy impala 4 door tan interior tilt ac,tan exterior has lonng been a fav of mine since the movie
to live and die in la,
a borrrrrrring movie except for the chase scene, which was pretty cool.

without further ado..
my 81 impala.,moss and all.
solid,has a frame,original paint,and 58 thousand original miles.
car came out of florida ages ago and never ran right so just sat in carport.

what i want to do,is yank the mighty 267 v8 w the dualjet carb and compooter controlled distributor all out in one yank,
and pop something a little more serious in there.

my questions for you pros would be
will the stock axle take it?
will the stock trans behind the 267/auto take it?

any thoughts on building a cruiser? tan impala 4 door
as far as suspension and so forth?
im looking for more of a handler than a racecar.

thanks in advance for the read, and any advice or help you can give.

Hello and welcome!

For pictures, I recommend not using the drag & drop feature. Instead, click the "Go Advanced" button next to "Post Quick Reply" and click the little paperclip icon to attach files.

Your files need to be a certain size, though, so you might need to use a program such as MS Paint to shrink the picture.

I can't say I've ever seen the movie, but I'd love to take a look at the cars!

Hope this helps.

Welcome to the forum When I pulled the 305 out of my 83 and put in a 350 I had to put in a new trans rated to handle the 350s HP. The 305 was 165 HP and the new 350 is 330 HP As for my rear axle it is holding up okay but yours may not given the small engine it was paired to. Oh and Tony will be no your case for PICSSSSS

thats what it was,thank you.
file size too big.
odd that it doesnt tell you that in the drag and drop stage but only in the advanced one.
great tip teerev, you were right on the money.

ill resize and try again in a bit.
heres the movieclip i was referring to.
the tan car is very close to what i bought i think,
except of course it being the jr version and not a real cop car.

lmk what you think.

Needs a good wash and polish to bring the paint to life. You know I've been really seriously looking into getting a 1977-1979 Chevrolet Caprice 4 door. Like you, I want to put a really good Chevy engine in it. My desired engine is an L83 5.3 EcoTec3 truck engine with a 8L90E or 6L80E transmission. I want the engine internals to be stock. No special camshaft, super charger, nothing like that. I just want a good engine that is power enough to drive such a heavy body on frame car.

I think this illustrates a generation gap When I look at the late 70's Caprice, I think of it as the smaller, lighter, no-so-heavy Caprice, as compared to my dad's 73 B-body

BTW, I like your idea of putting a modern engine and tranny in it.
