I agree not fair at all. But that was the question. Agree with you too that launching an 8th SS is a bitch. I could never perfect it. I tried and tried and sucked, so I bought the AWD Ford. LOL

I would expect a lighter car with 40hp more to be quicker.
What do the 5.3L cars run the quarter in?
Bone stock the b-bodies were low 15s with a few sneaking into high 14s, a few boltons will net 13s easily. The fastest full 6th gen went 12.3. I doubt there are many fwd cars quicker than that even with engine mods.

I think it's the other way around. Unless the gears have been changed in the 6th G.

Why are you bringing up a 2015 SS?

This particular thread is about the 6th (94-96) Gen vs 8th (06-09) Gen IMPALA SS. The 8t Gen SS has a 5.3 LS4 rated at 303 HP.

8th Gen

To be honest, the 8th Gen SS isn't the fastest.
surprisingly the V6 Direct injected puts out more
torque and hp.

mine took a Hemi Challenger off the line till about 3rd gear....

The direct injected V6 (LFX) has about the same HP (~300hp), but has significantly *less* torque than the 8th gen SS V8 (~262 for the LFX V6 vs ~323 for the V8).

Not sure where you are reading that the LFX V6 has more torque than the V8 in the 8th gen SS, but it doesn't - not even close.

My understanding is that the V8 SS will beat a V6 LFX any day because of the much higher torque.

the SS does have higher torque, but also has the slushbox 4t65e with super long gears.
the 6 speed you have will really help keep up with the 8th gen SS.
I think it would be a very close race.

Yeah, I thought about that, but in an all-out race, you'd probably never get out of 3rd gear anyway, so I'm not so sure the 6-speed trans would be all that beneficial in that kind of situation.

The 3->4 shift doesn't take place until 86mph in the 6-speed with the stock tune.

Here are the stock full-throttle shift points for the 6-speed (from a stock 2012 LT tune):
- 1->2 @ 38mph
- 2->3 @ 68mph
- 3->4 @ 86mph
- 4->5 @ 155mph
- 5->6 @ 318mph

Here are the stock full-throttle shift points for the 4-speed (from a stock 2008 SS tune):
- 1->2 @ 44mph
- 2->3 @ 84mph
- 3->4 @ 124mph

So really, there is only one extra gear being used on the 6-speeds (the 2->3 shift). Now with that said, I do realize tha the gearing is still different between the two, but I'm just not convinced that the 6-speed trans would make *that* much of a difference in a race. I guess it all depends on exactly what type of race it is (from a dead stop, a "rolling" start, length of race, etc).

I just remember someone posting that he and his wife raced the two (from a dead stop) and it was not even close. Although, I have no idea how long the race was - would have to do some searching to find the post. Obviously, not a "scientific" test, but...

Would be interesting to get some factual data on which is really faster though - would like to see them race in real life.

Gears=torque multiplication, it will help, how much who knows. That 2-3 gear is a huge difference between the two.
I know with my 3.69 gears it sure helped me stomp the supercharged version of my car.my second gear only goes to 74 mph used to go to 95mph. The acceleration is insanely different.

I had an 09 SS. We have a 14 Limited now. SS would win. Really. 3.6 is a much better engine, better gas mileage, better tranny, better balanced, and still quick. But having owned both, someone would be kidding themselves to think they're going to beat an SS......assuming it is launched halfway decently. The problem with it is that it launches incredibly difficult. The 3.6 is much easier to connect without spinning. From a rolling start, SS has even more of an advantage. We can talk about horsepower and torque numbers and power curves, but I have had both cars and I have tested them on the same testing equipment ( G Tech).... the fact of the matter is I didn't need any test equipment. My butt Dyno told me.
