06-12 interior door trim panel removal

Hello and welcome to my How to, about removing the interior door panel and running wires into the car through the rubber seals for leds.

Please bare with me as this is my first "How to" and this was made because I was looking for something like this before I started my project.

The main reason for this project was to add light from the main dome light switch to the door hinges and rear seat floors to match front seat floors.

So to begin.. I didn't have all of the proper tools for this, so I improvised some things.
What I used: socket wrench 1/4 adapter
7mm socket
10mm socket (optional) if you have proper star bit
5/32 Allen (should be replaced by propper star bit if you have it..but worked for me)
Small flathead screwdriver(to pop off plastic covers)
Wire strippers
Soldering gun, flux, solder
Wires, leds

The first step, if your adding leds would be to get all your lights ready to mount. Get all your connections soldered up and wires ready to attach.
When your lights are ready, its time to tear into the door, beginning with all the plastic bolt hiders. The plastic piece behind the mirror does not hide any bolts but it helps hold on the door panel so it must go. (If possible to do this project in a cooler environment your less likely to damage any plastic clips, as plastic is soft when hot) to remove it just wiggle it untill you can get your flathead in there to pry it off. Most of the pieces Chevy has a small notch where to pry at. This picture shows where all the little pieces come off from.
Once that's done, remove the screws & bolts




When all 4 are removed its time to pry off the door, at this point held on by pop in clips only.

Again Chevy left a pry port (bottom of door panel twords front)that my wire strippers worked magic on.

Work your way up from the bottom untilled it only hangs from the window seal where you just lift flighty and its off only leaving it attached by simple clips and the dozor handle wire. After removal of those two the door is free and off.


If you plan on doing led lights, and want to run the wires through rubber, the front two doors have a nice access port where the speaker is mounted. Unbolt it and you have full access to the door internals without tampering with the plastic security sheet.
From here your free to run wires through the grommet tunnel. When you get the wires into the car (driver front door only) you get get to hassel with the wire behind the carpet. I used thin solid wire from cat-6 internet wire, stripped it down to a color pair, bent it in half and pushed it down tunnel. The driver side door was the worst, I ended up using thick wire to do the first pass. Once you fish it out other side I formed a hook and ran it back with my thinner wire. Made another hook and ran it again through but with my led wire leads. If that's confusing, ill break it down.

From door to car with thick wire to engage a path.
From car to door with thin wire tied to thick.
Remove thick wire. Make loop with thin wire (still in tunnel)
Put the led leads into loop and pull into car from door.
Extract a propper amount of wire and attach speaker. Stick on the led strips, reattach the wire harness and door handle wire.
If I missed something or put something in backwards let me know. This is my first how to, and doing it off my phone so I hope it comes out right.

So wait, what did you actually connect the LEDs to? I just got my Impala and have never messed with LED strips before. Do the LEDs come on when the door is open and turn off when the door is closed?

The strips are wired to the sockets of the front footwell lights, that are on/off with the dome. Some plastic push pins hold the pieces up, and the socket twists into that piece.
Just be sure to get 12v wired strips. Most are.. but something to check. Also, ebay reels are much cheaper that Motozone strips.
