Fuel gauge problem

Hi, My impala is a 2001 with the 3,4 engine. I have trouble with the fuel gauge. Sometimes it indicates Full, sometimes it indicate Empty, but never 1/2 or 1/4 or whatever. I already had fuel gauge problemes with my other cars but it indicated sometimes empty, sometimes the real level of fuel. I tried the cluster (before changing the gauge in the tank) but no success... Same problem. Do you think like me: it's weird that it indicates Full or Empty but never the real level!? Does someone have any idea before I change the gauge? And also, is there any trap under the back seat or do I have to take of the tank? Thank you very much for anyone who could help

Common problem with the 2001. It is most likely the fuel pump/sending unit in the tank. I had to replace mine in my 01 Impala for the very same reasons. There is an access plate in the trunk just behind the back seat, tank does not have to come off.
