GM to pay for side detection modules!

I have just been informed by my dealer that GM has instituted a program to cover costs for damaged/defective side-detection modules! Apparently they now recognize that it has become a “thing”. They want me to bring my receipts and paperwork in to get the ball rolling for a full refund. Can I use $1100 bucks back? Oh hell yes! See your dealer for details.

Glad to hear they are taking care of this like they should. I don't have a 9th gen, but thanks for passing this along, sure it will help some.

My 6 year constantly asks why. What adults can learn from 5 and 6 year olds, to listen with your ears and mind open. Hard to learn when you don't listen ......

Hopefully they put it in writing.
We haven't had any issues on our Impala with about 33,000 miles but I have to admit it is worrying after reading so many posts about them.

Thank god! It is a safety hazard, the goddamn car needs those with how bad the blind spots are in a vehicle this big. I feel like i have comparable visibility inside my Kenworth when side detection glitches out lol.

Also, are you aware of any TSB's on this matter? I'd like to have something, anything.

Side detection modules? Is ticker/mirror blind spot not a thing anymore? I know newer cars don't have the same visibility as older models, but is it really so bad that you need a computer to detect things for you, rather than just keeping an eye out? Maybe add an extra convex mirror? Being a trucker, I'm used to relying on my mirrors alot and doing the driving myself without having a computer do it for me.

The convex mirror isnt a bad idea, i didn't think about that. But to be honest, the visibility in these newer ones are pretty bad. One time when it wasn't working properly and i knew a vehicle was coming i looked in my mirror and over my shoulder to see when i could i see it and cars mostly smaller ones disappear behind the rear pillars. If you don't know one is coming and that little orange light doesn't come on in the mirror then, well..

I recently bought a 2018 Dodge Challenger. You want to talk about blind spots?!?! However, if you adjust your mirrors properly, it's really not an issue at all. Most people (including myself originally) adjust their side mirrors so that they can see *their* car in the mirror, which is useless - what you *really* want is to adjust the side mirrors so that you see *other* cars, not yours. :-)

I can guarantee that blind spots are MUCH worse on my Challenger than on any Impala. But since I've properly adjusted my mirrors, I haven't had any issues whatsoever.

There are YouTube vidoes showing how to properly adjust your mirrors. Check them out.

I like technology in general, but I do NOT like all of this automated "safety" technology - I believe that it encourages bad driving habits. I'm talking about things like automatic braking, blind-spot detection, cross-traffic detection, etc. The problem is that people start relying on this stuff instead of just *being carful*. Like I said, it encourages bad driving habits.

Just my opinion, of course.

I agree. But drivers must use them. Not just when they're getting ready to change lanes, but all the time...in order to keep track of the cars around them. The two most critical places are the rear quarters. A driver needs to know someone is there and track that car until it's far enough behind or far enough ahead to not be a concern.

In short, I proactively track the cars around me - the mirrors are the tools to do that.
...

One thing I see that amuses me is drivers who need to move their heads to see out the mirror. If you need to do more than turn your head a tiny bit, then the mirror is not adjust properly. Folks who have to move their heads 6" to the left to see out the side view mirror don't get it

Wow, you guys actually appreciate driving alot more than many Jeep people I know. Ripped the DRL fuse out of my Impala and took a shotgun to the remote, and some of them start mocking me like heathens mocking my Christian faith. "Might as well swap the automatic transmission for a manual", or "might as well rip out the leather seats and replace with cloth", or "gotta get rid of your phone and use smoke signals, rip out the airbags and die like a real man", stuff like that. Except they're mocking me by suggesting I rip out systems that actually have some use when I've only tried to get rid of overly redundant things I don't have any use for.

Maybe a fabricator can be found to install brush guards with fender mirrors on the front of you guys' last-generation rides?

So umm yea. So has anyone found any documentation that says GM is going to reimburse or fix these problems for free yet?
