Full Tank Distance to Empty 282 miles?!?!

2017, 3.6L, S6

So I purchased a used 2017 V6 today. Off the lot with 1/2 a tank. Went to fill it up and on a full tank of gas it only shows 282 miles to empty.

With 18.5 gallons and 25mpg it should read something like 460 miles to empty.

rut ro shaggy! What have I gotten myself into?

Any suggestions?

The miles to empty is based on what ever the avg mpg was when it was previously driven, reset the trip mileage, avg mpg and avg speed. Drive it for a tank and it should improve.

That's my take, too. There's no fuel flow sensor in the line, so the computer estimates the flow rate, and hence gas mileage, based on averaging the fuel level sensor readings and odometer readings.

It's pretty clever. But I wouldn't want be in the middle of nowhere to find out that the estimated miles to empty was off by 20

I'm sure there are a few cars where the low fuel warning light doesn't come on until the tank is past empty

Doug

[Edit] I meant to include, the throttle position sensor has to be logged by the PCM, and that data factored into the miles-to-empty calculations.

If your socket set is all the same brand, you might be a city slicker.

Thanks Plano-Doug, I drive a lot of highway miles. 60 miles one-way to work. When I left this morning it read 282 miles to empty, when i arrived at work 60 miles later it read 292. So it looks like it will adjust slowly over time as the mpg increases as a result of the better highway mileage.

S6 = Shiftable 6 Speed Automatic

as Bowtie stated it is based on the average MPG, it was probably driven on the dealer lot for some time bringing the average mpg way down thus making it 282 until empty. Drive it on the highway for a bit it will re calculate. I got average 25-27mpg in my 14

I honestly don't know Bowtie. I'm here to learn. I appreciate all the help the folks like you can offer.

Thanks for the additional piece of mind 04palaSS. I'll drive a few weeks and update the post in case any other newcomers experience the same issue.

all 9th gen impalas (on this site 2014 and up are listed as 9th gen, you'll find wikipedia or other sites probably refer to them as 10th gen) received a 6-speed auto trans with the option to manually shift the car. 2012 and up received the same 6 speed and 3.6 v-6 motor. 2014-2016 limited impalas are the old 8th gen body style with the same 3.6/6-speed trans as the 9th gen. you'll find a lot of the drive train parts in the 3.6 new body style are probably the same or very similar to the 2012-2016 impala/impala limited cars.

Thanks Joes74Challenger. Good information that hopefully I won't need for a while 😉. But if something does go wrong at least there's a lot of knowledge on that trans system by now.

Where did you find the term S6 ? Was it in the sales info that the seller advertised ? It is a term I have not heard of before in relation to an Impala.

Yes, on the Autotrader ad, it read something like "3.6L V6 S6 trans..." The listing is gone now of course or I'd send it along.

I knew it wasn't me who made it up though
