Unusual sound at cold start

Iím going to take the car in next weekend for an oil change and ask the dealer to watch this. But when our impala has a cold start, when going into reverse we get this sound for about 5-10 seconds. It never happens when warm. Any thoughts?

Does it only happen backing out of the garage? I am wondering if it is some sort of echo.

My old Altima made that sound when cold, it was a heat shield for the manifold being loose. Not sure but it sounds like sheet metal tapping on other metal.

i have found heat shields to be a pain in the rear occasionally. let it cool down and see if you can find the one on the exhaust causing the issue (also check areas near a high heat source for being loose as well). or in the event you can't track where it's from, just turn the radio up louder (that's what my wife does...).

Sounds very similar to what my 2013 does. Few others on here have the issue to. I notice it more if I start it up and right away put it in gear. I think that rpm and cold exhaust trigger a harmonic resonance of some sort.
First I've heard of on a 9th gen though. Still might be worth checking out this thread

Claimed to find the issue as a flex pipe.

If your socket set is all the same brand, you might be a city slicker.

Yeah I know, I actually just got a wheel bearing replaced under warranty. It was making a buzzing noise and I took it in immediately. I would do it myself, but why bother when I can get it done for free lol. My point being, it’s best to take care of a problem as soon as it arises, but some people don’t care enough or are too lazy.

Don't ya just hate rattles like that especially on your new car? I was gonna make some smart comment about the rubber band tensioner but it didn't seem appropriate. Thank your lucky stars it wasn't a lifter pumping up or worse yet a rod knocking.

I am glad I found someone else that has the same exact problem. Mine had it at around 30K miles and it is the same exact sound. I would use the autostart to try to avoid it but its still a pain to deal with and sounds so bad when I am in my garage too echoing to all the neighbors. I will take it in to see if its the heat shield.

I had the same problem and it was all bad. It ended up being the heat shield inside of the wheel well on my passenger rear side. Bending it seemed risky so before I started drilling holes to secure it I tried hitting the side that was making contact with some rubberized undercoating left over from my truck and I haven't heard it since. Make sure you use a drop cloth and tape EVERYTHING off that you don't want the undercoating on because that ish sprays everywhere.

It was hella embarrassing. I like turning heads with my vehicles but only on my terms and that noise was obnoxiously loud in parking garages. Good luck man!
