Impala future

I read a while back that gm considered ending the production of the impala and a few other cars. (Due to the lack of interest in full size cars) has anything else been announced? Is there an impala redesign coming soon?

Last I heard was that the Impala will go away completely, so I doubt there will be a complete redesign.

However, I don't think anything has been made "official", so who knows for sure (but could be wrong about that - maybe something *has* been mad official?).

Anyone else have an updated info about the future of the Impala?

Rumors abound. These are being built in Rust Belt UAW Assembly plants that GM is probably closing out. The word "Underutilized" in newsey articles and offhand remarks from the suits is generally a pre-cursor to plant closure. Look at newspaper articles from the 80's about Norwood, OH and articles about the Syracuse, NY New Process and Muncie, IN New Venture gearbox plants... It doesn't look good for the continued production past 2020 or so.

If the current rage for SUV's/CUV's, or whatever they are, continues, then the Impala will probably fade away again. A big spike in the price of gas would probably change that, but who knows. I'm glad I've got mine, and enjoy driving it still. With just 28K miles, the only thing keeping it from being as good as new, is a new set of tires.

Petroleum will go up and down again many more times before they plant me.
It may even go up noticeably before 2020.

Til someone with the authority to make the decision says "It's dead Jim." we don't know.

Sedan sales are in the toilet, oil prices have found a ceiling and people rave over CUVs/SUVs. RIP Impala.

In an article by GM Authority, they refers to the 2019 Impala as possibly the last or the second to last Impala of this generation. The possibility of another generation is pure speculation at this time, considering the popularity of
CUVs and the Malibu.

Considering whenever you see the "Chevy Lineup" whether on tv ads or in mailers,
you never see the Impala. If they complain of lack of sales, tough to sell something people can't see.

2019 will have minor changes to features/equipment groups; one or two new exterior; one or two new interior
combinations; new MyLink infotainment system; no changes to powertrain.

OT: I worked in a shop one summer in college, in the early 80's. We had an early-mid 60's F series truck with the 4-speed truck (granny) transmission in it, from New Process. One of the guys in the shop rebuilt it and I got to watch a bit of it. It's amazing what one can learn looking inside one of those torn open

That's my understanding, that buyers are fleeing the sedan segment. So , regardless of styling, engineering, marketing and promotion, the major factor will be whether the SUV trend continues, and it appears cheap fuel will be around for a while, thanks partly to fracking. So there may not be enough sedan business left to justify both the Malibu and the Impala.

OTOH, one thing in its favor is the shared platform. Perhaps, because the Impala shares production with other GM sedans, it be can be continued at a lower volume level that would otherwise be too low for a stand-alone model.

Impala could share the platform of the newly redesigned Buick Lacrosse.
