Question Adding OEM camera

Hi, I searched around for this but I didn't find a thread with my exact question in it.

I have a 2015 Impala LT (I think it's an LT2. It has the V6.) My car did come with the touchscreen infotainment system, but it did not come with a backup camera. I would like to add the factory backup camera to the car so that it mounts in the factory location and displays on my screen like it would on any car that had come with it.

I called my usual dealership and the service guy said this was impossible, even though it seems to me like it should be possible.

Has anyone here done it? How difficult is the install? Does anyone know where I could find what parts I need?

Thank you!

hooking the camera up and running the wires is the easy part (and cheap)

its the labor to pull the head unit out and hook up the module and the mini HD cable to the radio *the module tells the camera to come on when in reverse) thats the expensive part. i believe GM charges $800 for everything up. but i would like to find the place that just sells the parts. so i can do it myself, its not very hard at all

i know theirs a you-tube video of someone pulling a mylink out of a car

The OEM rearview camera gets its power from the ignition main relay and is wired to the BCM to get the reverse signal to turn on the camera. The camera itself is wired into the Human Machine Interface Control Module, or HMI module, and the HMI module sends the picture to the video display. With the vehicle not having the camera from the factory, all the wiring is not present for the camera not to mention the programming in the HMI module and possibly other modules, BCM for example, for the camera to function may not exist in the modules and may not be able to be added since the programming is tied to the vehicles VIN and op codes. I don't even know if it's possible to add the oem camera. May have to look into the aftermarket world and see if one of them can work for you.

Open your trunk and reposition or remove the trim panel, look for the connector circled in the attached graphic. If the connector is almost fully occupied with wires on one side of the connector, then your trunk is prewired for the camera. If theres only 2-4 wires on either side of connector, its not. if it is, let me know and Ill show you next place to look for chassis harness wiring.

According to a tech at a dealer. LS models are not prewired, but LT models are. Could you show me where the chassis harness wiring is? I'd like to see if this is too difficult for me to do before I order the camera kit. I am pretty handy, but just need to make sure.

Thanks!

Find the connector called out as #3 in the graphic I posted, its a black 18 position connector. look and the middle row of 6 positions. If theres only 1 wire you dont have any wiring for the camera, if theres 4 wires you have a camera ready body harness

Hello, I have a 2016 impala and I want to place the camera, but the trunk has 3 cables on each side, where could I find another place to connect the camera?

Has anyone installed this kit? It integrates into the display. The rear vision out of this car is terrible; the only thing I donít like.

I agree, these new Impalas should not be purchased without the rearview camera option along with the safety package for side alert. They are very hard to see out the back.
We had to drive a rental Impala when ours was in the shop for the trunk lid to be fixed from hail damage and it did not have the rear view camera. It was kind of nerve racking backing that thing up. Was so glad to get our car back.

Yes it is possible. The wires are already there even if you don't have a camera. I have a 16 lt2 and added a backup camera, although for some reason if you go to the dealership they don't just sell the camera. So you have to go after market which is perfectly fine. Also be aware there is updated wiring so the aftermarket camera may not work correctly.
