Check Engine Light, P0024?

Hi,

It's going into the dealer as soon as I can get in since I still have warranty on it, but since I couldn't find much about the code, I figured I'd ask here.

2012 LTZ. Car's running fine, on a day trip back from Foxwoods (about a 3 hour drive), it trips the check engine light. I happen to have my code scanner on me, and plug it in and it throws P0024 and P0000. Read it again, as P0000 isn't a valid code, and it gives me two P0024, one with a freeze frame. From what I can gather online from the little thats out there, it's a timing issue, which one would figure that I'd notice or at least lose a bit of fuel economy, yet I got 30MPG for the trip.

Thankfully it tripped at 35746, and my bumper to bumper runs out at 36000, but I figured I'd post so if someone else gets it and isn't as lucky as me, maybe someone would know. Plus I'm a bit curious.

Thanks.

the code is for "Exhaust Camshaft Position System Performance Bank 2". Their is a TSB out for changing the Exhaust Camshaft Position solenoid valve with a longer service part depending on the engine code on the EUN sticker. If the numbers do not match up on the sticker to what's noted in the TSB then it could still be the solenoid valve or the mechanical camshaft position actuator, or low oil level. Will need a tech2 to actuate the solenoid valve to find out if it's working right. Good thing your still under the bumper to bumper warranty.

Wow, thanks, that was a lot more detailed than I expected!

I tried to make an appointment with the dealer the next day but they didn't have any room. I couldn't make it the day after because I had to work, and obviously they're not going to be open on the 4th. They told me they put in the notes that I called before my warranty ran out in case my trip on the 4th puts me over.

Oddly enough the light went out after another few trips, but the freeze frame is still in the system according to my dads code reader so I'm still going to bring it in for them to check it out.

Did the fix work for you Bart77?
How much did it cost?
Got a 2012 with 42K and this same problem.
Also suddenly the Remote start won't work.
Anyone who can help here, it would be appreciated.

Oil condition, pressure and viscocity are very important to these engines. Keeping decent clean oil is very important for VVT operation, as is proper oil filter.

If you don't use a filter with the appropriate bypass pressure specs these codes can pop up. Regardless of what the cross references tell you, there really are only a couple filters that work well on these. PF63, which are discontinued.( The PF63E is its replacement but has the plastic Ecore design and a questionable reputation) The PF64 is a very good filter, and its what comes on these from the factory now. If you go long OCIs it may not be the best because it is cellulose and short canister. Its fine for anything within OLM though (7500 miles max on everything with current software . The Fram XG10575 is an excellent filter, is readily available and I haven't heard of any issues from them though they technically have the older low pressure bypass.

The WIX 57502XP is my personal choice for best filter for the 3.6. Its longer than the PF64 and PF48. Its got a silicone ADBV, nice heavy canister and thread plate, synthetic media with wire backing, and the appropriate 22psi bypass spec.

This is the filter that goes on my 3.6 when I'm not using my free oil changes(it gets a PF64 then) and its what I've recommended for use on out of warranty customers with oil based issues, and for fleet customers. (Its too expensive to include in the standard loss leader oil change promo. That's gets a PF64 though.)

That may have been a little long but basically:
PF64 for general use, even if dealer does your OC.
WIX 57502 premium replacement.(my opinion best filter currently available)
Fram XG10575 premium replacement, lots of good words, direct cross per Fram.

Surprisingly I was low on oil, topped it off. Few hours later after a couple crank ups, CEL turned off. Hope this helps someone.

Are these filter #'s correct for the Wix and Fram? Every auto parts website I use tell me these filters are not a correct fit for my 2012 LTZ...

Yes, those are both accurate numbers. I've used both filters on customer and personal vehicles for years now.

The Fram site will give you the 10575 if you search by PF63E. The 10060 that it's likely showing you is because the 2012s were originally fitters with and called for PF48s.

The Wix(and it's napa variant) filter is a good filter and is very widely available that's why I started using it. However since I first sourced that filter as a replacement for the PF63 cross references that didn't meet the proper new specs, WIX has released a filter that does meet the current PF63E specs. It's Wix WL10255XP. It has the added benefit of being taller than the original filter I had sourced and recommended and it pops up as a PF63 cross reference on Wixs site
