How far after empty?

I have a 2006 impala lt with the 3.5 engine and was wondering how far after my gas gauge reads empty can I go? I'm not intending on doing this because I know it can ruin your fuel pump but just for emergency cases. Anybody know the capacity of the reserve tank if there is one? I topped off my tank at 3/4 full and it showed just under 6 gallons of fuel added which doesn't make sense to me because its a 17 gallon tanks so there should have been 4.25 gallons added. This leads me to believe either the gas gauge is wrong or there is some type of reserve tank.

Your tank is not shaped the same at the top as it is at the bottom. It's larger on top. I have a 2004 and my upper 3/8 is the same as my lower 5/8. That said, there is no reserve and on MY 3.4 I can go about 40 miles before the car starts to run funky.

Most vehicles fuel gauges are calibrated so that when the gauge is on "E" and the low fuel warning light/message is displayed their is approximately two gallons of fuel remaining in the tank. I unfortunately make it here all the time. The other end, aka "Full", is another matter. Some cars full means full and others, like my wife's '02 Regal, it's can be anywhere from 3/4 of a tank to full.

Ok thanks, that makes sense because when I fill up and it's on empty, I can put about 15 gallons in so that explains the extra 2 gallons

Don't read too much into the marks on the gauge.

Hell lots of b-body guys have run empty with the needle over "E" but on my cars I can go down to "E" without a problem in normal driving.

Get to know your car and go from there.

How level the car is plays into how the tank fills too, if the fill side is low due to weight in the car or something than there will be a high side air pocket. Then at the same time the tank ratings aren't a true maximum volume, if you want you can likely get a little more fuel in there than the rated amount.

I know my 79 is empty when the needle starts to spin halfway around to the full side. 270 degree sweep

Today, halfway to school my idiot sensor said low fuel, and it wouldn't give me my mileage till empty anymore.
I drove it another 65-70 hwy/city miles (I seriously thought I was gonna have to call AAA) & filled it plumb FULL a few minutes ago (18.6gal. )

I know now that I should easily get away w/ 50miles past the warning...
Btw, mine's an '11

I Have An 08 & I Usually Go Another 15-20 Miles Once The "Fuel Level Low" Sign Comes Up, But I Never Risk It More Than That

When i see E on my tank it usually only heads towards the nearest gas station about 5 to 10 kms cause it freaks me out to see low gas... i always have half tank or full tank in car. need to be careful here in canada imagine getting stuck in traffic in winter/blizzard... if tank close to E i doubt one can make it home.

I have a 2003 and I was wondering how far it can go before it's almost empty? I estimated around 2 hours or a little more before I almost on E. Im use to over filling my tank that way I can drive with extra gas I want to know what you think.

I don't know about true distance to "E" but I can chime in on estimated range for the 3.6lfx guys here. On the interstate I have been as far as 430 miles from full till the needle got to the first red mark before E. I don't recall the gallons replaced but it cost $30 at about 2.25 a gal for somewhere around 14 gallons. Looks like there should be about two to three gallons remaining on E.

As far as pushing range, keeping the tank above 1/2 is a good way to keep a reserve for a SHTF emergency where you need to GTFO where everyone has bought all the gas in a panic.

Here in the DFW area, we're still feeling the effects of Harvey. When I filled up yesterday (from below 1/4), the RaceTrac was out of premium (but had plenty of regular). I can only imagine how bad it is in Florida.

That is, keeping it above 1/2 is not a bad idea right now

I was asking anyone because I plan on driving back to Michigan from Las Vegas. Since I'd have to fill up on gas ALOT, Do you guys think I could make it back to Michigan? I just would like some advice from anyone that knows a lot of old Chevy impalas! Thanks!

Garage
Idea:

Put some gas in a gas can, then ride around until it runs out of gas.

Take a picture on your phone, keep it for the trip and post your pic here, and a pic of you filling it back up with gas.

Then, you'll know and we'll know.
