Thinking of purchasing a 2012 or 2013 Impala LTZ

Hello everyone,

I am new here but I have been looking over some of the forums and other research on these cars. I currently drive a 2001 Olds Aurora and I have driven an 2002 Intrigue and a 1994 Cutlass in the past and I al looking at the newer Impalas to replace my Aurora due to the car aging. I am trying to stay away from the 4T65e transmission so I am looking at the 12 and 13 models specifically. I am hoping it will be a good replacement of something that is similar to what I have been used to but new enough to avoid rust and rot. I like the stock rims on the LTZ trim i also like how these look and they seem to be DIY friendly, the newer model are to expensive and complex looking. How would you rate these cars from a smooth riding highway car? I understand that these cars are not as nice as a Buick or Olds but I am looking to simplify a little but and have something with lots of aftermarket support and I refuse to purchase a new car being under 30 to what i understand car dealerships like young people to talk into a bad deal plus depreciation etc. Anyway let me know how these cars hold up and how you like the drive train, I hear these cars are like sleepers. I look forward from hearing from you guys.

The Cutlass and Intrigue were both w-bodies, so you will find many similarities with the 2012-2013 (gen8) Impalas. The LFX 3.6 liter engine along with the 6T70 transmission have good reputations.

I'm curious about your Aurora. Are you getting rid of it? Or planning to keep it as a fixer-upper of sorts? With the DOHC V8 engine, it has some hot rodding potential

Yes I have a soft side for w bodies the bench seat and column shiftier I miss from my Cutlass, solid car. My aurora has the v6 option, i wanted a v6 because i was found of it from my intrigue. I am hoping the newer 8th gen impala are just as reliable and solid. However I do understand that the cars from the early 90s are not the same vehicle in terms of materials but that ok. If i had to pick i would pick up a 93 or 94 Cutlass convertible such a jem just like the v8 auroras and the tornado, a touch screen in a car in 1988 just out of this world, anyway, I am a bit worried of some of the evap issues talked about on here but it seems like a new gas cap if the usual fix, as for modding if i pick one up i am planning to do some easy mods like LED taillights and the H11 to h9 headlight mod sinc i will miss my HIR mods from my aurora. Please tell me more about the impala!

the 12 and newer cars seem to hold up quite well. the 6 speeds are solid, the 3.6 does well. the ride on the LTZ would be a little sportier i believe due to a slightly different strut package but still no where near harsh or rough. keep in the mind the 18 inch wheels do have a tire rubbing issue so when replacing them you want to be careful the struts would clear your tires (articles in here tell which part numbers you would need to be safe).

i don't think you would go wrong with a 12-16 (14-16 limited are still the old body style like the 06-13's). wheel bearings/wheel speed sensors come up occasionally but aren't a terribly hard fix from what i've read (articles in here describing what to do to fix that as well).

I came from a 95 Park Avenue and loved the upgrade. the 2010 i had rode great and ran reasonable compared to the 3800. the 3.6 is 100 hp more than my 3.5 was.

Good luck finding a low mileage car or a car that has good maintenance records and has not been abused at a reasonable price. Would be critical to me to know that the car was properly maintained and that the car was not abused before buying.

In my opinion the 12 and newer impala's with the lfx and 6 speed are pretty solid. We have a 2012 model lt and have had no major issues. Have over 160,000 miles on the car. Have had a couple minor issues, but nothing that has been costly and nothing I have not been able to work on myself. The hubs on these cars are known to fail at some point, especially if they have been/are driven on roads with potholes.

I mostly have driven larger vehicles(trucks and suv's) most my life so my opinion is maybe not the best on how smooth the car is compared to other cars, but our car rides just fine to me.

Far as a "sleeper car" these are factory capable of running 0-60 in around 6 seconds and some guys are getting 14 and under quarters with a tune and bolt on mods. Not too bad for a car that gets 30 mpg highway.

My 6 year constantly asks why. What adults can learn from 5 and 6 year olds, to listen with your ears and mind open. Hard to learn when you don't listen ......

There is a thread on here somewhere titled "how are your Impalas holding up" or something along those lines
Find that and read it, lots of opinions.

In a nutshell, mine is my daily, back and forth to work 104 miles round trip, so 520 miles a week just commute mileage. The car has been solid, needing very little in maintenance. All I have done so far is a ton of synthetic oil changes, 3 trans drain and fills, had the front rotors turned, but still on factory pads, new battery, new front hub bearings, new tires and an alignment, and the few mods I have listed in my sig, with the most expensive being the complete stereo system upgrade. It has been a great car for me. Plenty of room, good fuel mileage, plenty of power, good ride manners, etc. I plan to hang on to it well over 200K miles, at which point I may find a newer daily and keep the Impala as a reliable and cheap back up.

I have read that thread is was a good read. I keep hearing good things about the 12s and 13s here in Canada. I have a question about the wheels, you are saying that the factory 18'' rims with tires have a tenancy to rub? Also I have good winter tires i used on my Aurora that I have had since my Intrigue that sit on 16'' intrigue rims, I believe the bolt pattern is the same but wil they fit on a LTZ without rubbing?

I bought a 13 LT last fall that had 171K on it. So far has been good. I've had to replace an evap sensor, don't remember which, cost me $120 to have a garage do it. Change oil and tranny fluid. I don't drive but less than a mile to work right now so now it has 174K on it.

I bought it from a guy my family trusts, is a salesman, for 4K. I figure of it last me a year and a half without any major expense I got my monies worth out of it.

Any input on putting 16 inch Intrigue rims on a 2012 LTZ? Also Does the LFX engines suffer from waveplate issues at all like the previous versions of this engine?

Dunno about the Intrigue rims, but the '12/'13 Impala LS came stock with 16" rims. The LT came with 17" and the LTZ came with 18".

A post 2005 Impala will not, to my knowledge, have a column shifter with bench seats, if that's worth anything to you. Saw you mentioned it in your own post as a nostalgia factor(I like it on my 2003), so it seemed worth pointing out. Also a post-1999 Impala is guaranteed to have headlights that turn on when the switch is off, with no known permanent fix. Government calls it a safety feature, I call it knuckling under my own lazy generation instead of training more of us to drive. Otherwise they seem to hold up pretty well, 2000-2013 Impalas are just about on every street corner up here in rural Michigan, despite all the rust and the 2000-2005 models weakness for said rust under the side skirts.

Looking up my intrigue rims on originalwheels.com as well as a 2012 Impala LS 16 inch rims have the same measurements and I also found that both rims take the same tire size. If the brakes and rotors and calipers are the same from the LS to the LTZ it should fit without issue.

I think what was meant by the tire rubbing was that if you buy an LTZ that has the factory 18s on it, you have to make sure that replacement struts you may buy in the future are for 18" wheels. There is a difference in 16 and 17" wheel struts and 18" wheel struts. Guys that have bought factory 18s to put on their cars found that the tires rubbed the strut perch. If this isn't what was meant than hopefully someone can clarify.

My 2014 LTZ Limited came with factory 18" (235/50R18). No rubbing noticed.
I use the 16" wheels (235/60R16) from my retired 2005 Impala for the winter tires.
FYI: If the car has the police package, the over-sized brakes will not fit inside the 16" wheels.
