Vapor Canister Vent Solenoid

My vapor canister solenoid is dying or near death( telling me to tighten gas cap, and made MIL light to light up,P0455 EVAP emission control system large leak) I unplugged the electrical connection, how long can i safely drive with it unplugged, I do not have the money to buy a new one for a while, I know its a nuisance code and just wondering how long I can run with it unplugged?

I like to bowl and drive my impala

Leave it plunged in or unplugged won't hurt anything. New one from RockAuto <$15.

OP-question, when unplugged to you get another or different error code such as 00446/P0447?

I was going to post a new thread about the P0455 error as I had searched some last fall on this issue and found very little discussing that specific code. Now with warmer temperatures (on some days that is- 32 yesterday and possible snow again today) I have been getting the Tighten Gas Cap message and then P0455 check engine light on my 06. I just looked at new Gas Caps on Rock Auto and was not sure if I should try a junk yard first or go with a new cap. Then if it continued I'd have to check some more of the fuel vapor emissions like the vapor canister solenoid or even from the little I have read, other items that slowly increase in replacement time and costs.

How easy is the vapor canister solenoid to DIY?

I've dealt with it a few times in the last month or so by hitting the button on the dash to get the Tighten Gas Cap off the display, having my OBDI 2 bluetooth plugged into the car, reset the CE code with Torque app and just continue down the road...

There are some tests you can run with a bi-directional scanner that will pinpoint what the problem is. I posted some very good teaching videos I found on Youtube in another thread outlining exactly how to troubleshoot the evap system.

Leave it plugged in til you can diagnose it. The plug contacts will corrode if you leave it unplugged. With a corroded plug, it'll throw different codes even with a working evap solenoid and you'll have to replace the plug too.

Throwing parts at it will end up costing a lot more than actually diagnosing it.

Used gas cap? Dang. You sound like my father. He'd buy used spark plugs and air filters if he thought he could get away with it. Stant gas caps are $10-$15 new. I bet the yard charges that much for a used one. Not remotely worth it unless it's FREE.

The vapor canister itself is a 10-20 minute job, drivers rear fender and look up it's right there. note:pay attention to the connectors, i had to use a pigtail to make the new part work (rock auto shows it in the fine print on the page last i knew, auto zone had it in stock with the part).

if that doesn't fix it then it's a 30 dollar part under the hood, again it was about a 20 minute fix.

in my experience i did under the hood first then the rear canister, my issue was tied to the rear canister.

First since I found this I tried another search on the P0455 code and found your discussion and videos links that were put up this winter. I do very little DIY in the winter time due to not having any heated garage so last I searched was as I stated in the Fall. Weather still has to get a bit better, but my latest mileage seems to have gone down.

I could swap my brothers newer Impala gas cap with mine for a tank or 2, for a quick test of the cap first, that is free starting point of course.

After watching the diagnostics video I am also going to have to check to see if I can do any of the EVAP Solenoid command tests with Torque app and the OBDI or not to try and narrow it down to rear of vehicle or under the hood.

Borrowing a known-good gas cap as a sanity check is a good idea. It's bad or it's not. You know after you drive a good distance. If your brother comes along you can compare notes to see if his throws a code with your cap too.
