[Solved,possibly] 2012 Impala Engine missing, P0303, P0300,P0396 codes

Hello Folks,

I'm just writing this post in a bid to help anyone else who might run into the same problem.

Problem: While driving, my engine would spontanenously begin missing (no spark). The car would begin to shake and I would eventually have to set it down, and call a tow truck. After taking the car to three mechanics, one of which was the dealership, none of them could find a solution.

The misses would occur randomly, and I couldn't figure out how to reproduce it while at the mechanics. However, there were a few things that seemed to make it occur, but they only seemed to give me a 5% chance more of it happening.

1. Stopping rather hurriedly and then taking off again rather quickly. This was probably the thing that would make it happen more than anything.

2. Turning on flat land and then going up a hill

3. The car had been driven for ~30 minutes or more.

At the first occurence of this issue, the CEL came on and when I pulled the code, it was a P0303. I changed my spark plugs, and had the coil pack on cylinder #3 changed.

A few months later it did the same thing, but this time, it was a P0300.

In the meantime, I began to be able to "feel" when my car was about to lose it's marbles, and I had two options, either gun it, or back off and it would regain composure.

Then, while on my lunch break, my CEL came on with a P0496. This lead me to change the EGR solenoid. Once I did that, the problem went away and I haven't had any problems in the last 3 weeks.

P.S If anyone has any formatting advice, let me know.

So the egr solenoid fix took care of the random misfire code in your case. Good info for the archives, might save someone a lot of headache. Surprised it did not trip the code for the egr earlier though.

My 6 year constantly asks why. What adults can learn from 5 and 6 year olds, to listen with your ears and mind open. Hard to learn when you don't listen ......

Yeah, I was surprised how long it took too. I knew that I had two options, 1. Sell the car (while it's underwater loan-to-value wise) in an immoral and dirtbag fashion to someone and hurt them (yikes!!!) 2. Wait for whatever problem was happening to go from intermittent to constant and then fix that.

I looked at pretty much everything that might have been the problem, from bad computers, to pinched wires, to bad sensors, to bad grounds, to low fuel pressure. But thankfully, I'm neither bold enough to investigate those things myself, or rich enough to pay someone to do it for me. So it was nice that the bad part was on top of the engine and could be fixed after work.
