So I had a troubling experience with my cruise control yesterday and was curious if anyone else had this issue...
To start out, I have a 2013 LT with 57k miles.
I was driving down the highway yesterday with my cruise set at 75mph. I had to slow down to about 70, but then clicked resume to get back to 75. I looked down when I heard my car downshift to accelerate back to 75 (it never downshifts usually) only to see that I was going 80 and it was still accelerating. I clicked the cancel button which turned the cruise off for 0.1 seconds and then it turned itself back on and kept accelerating. I tried pushing the cancel button a few more times and each time it would turn itself right back on (could see the light turning on and off on my dash). At this point I was pretty concerned as I was up to almost 90 mph, and turned the cruise completely off. Luckily this actually turned it off. I got back down to 70 mph and tried it again. Everything worked fine and continued to work properly for the rest of the trip.
Anyone have any insight to what I should even check with this? I played around with the cruise to see if maybe the resume/accel button was constantly pressed down if that would cause this issue, but when I tried to physically hold it down, as soon as I hit cancel it does not come back on. Should I sell my car which clearly has a pissed off ghost? I know how to prevent this from happening, and am not super concerned myself, but I would be concerned if my wife was driving and something like that happened.
I did have some strange activity with mine once but only after the battery died with the key in the on position.
I boosted the car to get it going and, among other things, had some strange symptoms with the cruise. Having to press the brake pedal a long way to disengage it, hard acceleration on resume etc.
There were some other issues occurred at the same time. RKE would not work properly and the HVAC was acting a bit strange.
It was still under warranty at the time and took it in to dealer and they had to re-flash the BCM.
All is, and has been well since.
I had been waxing the car in the garage and left the key in the ON position to listen to the radio. The battery will die pretty quickly doing that as apparently everything is "awake" and the rundown protection thing don't work when the key is in the ON position.
Lesson learned.
Ive also heard that a faulty brake light switch can cause some issues with the cruise control as well. More than just "not work".
It almost sounds like a bad Cruise switch. It shouldn't go bad but I guess with other things like these I guess it could?
Seeing the Resume and the Accelerate is one of the same it almost sounds like when you pressed Resume it started to but then for what ever reason stayed in contact with the switch to then make it accelerate...
Again Shy of turning off the system it would seem that with it on it would try to accelerate once set. However if the system was turned off for say a minute or 2 and then turned back on the system would reset and even if the switch was bad it wouldn't do anything again until the Set was active. Because the Cruise don't understand other input until set...

That is what I thought might be the issue too, but when I tried to hold that button down and then hit cancel, it stayed cancelled and did not turn itself back on again like what I experienced. I think the turning itself back on again and continuing to accelerate is the most concerning part of this.
I would take it to the dealer. This is one of those issues that could be very dangerous.
Tell them what you told us - print it out and hand it to the service writer. Make them understand clearly what happened.
There may be a technical service bulletin, which may also include a fix. But the key is that you let the dealer, and hence the factory, be aware of the issue.
It won't cost you anything to talk to a service writer, other than your time.

We regret to see you are having some issues with your Impala's cruise control and would be happy to look into this further on our end. We would like to check for any service announcements or recalls that may be associated. If interested, please send us a private message with your VIN.
I am not sure. However from the sounds of everything in your post it sounds Switch Related. It shouldn't come back on once the car was turned off but if cruise was only thing under the Fuse I would Remove the fuse IF it wasn't only thing under the fuse and could toss a CEL I would disconnect the power going to your Cruise control box under the hood...
Problem is in my thought of Electronics. If there is an issue with your switch, Even turning it off may not have transmitted that to the computer that you wanted it off. Then seeing that the switch is bad (If it is Bad) it took the input that you wanted to resume and Accel, Again this is the theory that the switch is not working right...
Now in Theory seeing that the car has since been turned off and it don't keep info about Cruise being set once started again in Theory it shouldn't be able to turn back on with out first being instructed to set. However seeing if the switch is defective it could be doing a lot of commands that you haven't asked it to do and is why I wouldn't drive it until the Fuse or cruise has been disabled until repairs can be done..
Ok sadly looking over your year of car it seems your car is purely Electronic and there isn't a fuse for your cruise control... Then now also makes it seem like they may no longer have it set to a Cable with power connection anymore either. So Computer and 2 switches works the Cruise. At this time I hope there is something that can be done with the Help of Erica from Chevrolet Customer Car and your local dealer.. I wouldn't drive it if your car after being turned off will turn your Cruise back on without your input...
If it was my car.. I would try and start the car, Drive it until I got to 30 to 35 miles an hour and see if the cruise turns on.. If it did, Then I wouldn't drive until it could be fixed by a shop.. IF it don't turn on by itsself I would drive it only myself and withthe mind set not to set the cruise until the car could be repaired...
Sorry if I was not clear, the cruise turned off when I turned the cruise switch off (did not need to turn the car off). There is a cruise on/off toggle, as well as a cancel button. When I was pressing the the cancel button, the cruise would deactivate then kick right back on. As soon as I turned cruise off, there were no more issues. I can drive with the car with the cruise off.
In fact I just played with it a little more and found out that the issue is with the physical switch itself. If I push on the bottom of the resume button just right, it sticks halfway down. I wasnt able to replicate the turning itself back on when cancel was hit (not sure how it did that, maybe just floating between on/off position perfectly) I was able to get it to stick on accel, and it continued to accelerate without me holding it down. Strange that this happens, not sure what it gets hung up on. If i push the button on the top I could never get it to stick. I may look into replacing the switch.
I appreciate the feedback and advice from everyone. Anyone know how easy the cruise control switch is to replace? Do I need to mess with the airbag/taking steering wheel off?
Sorry That was what I thought it was being said at first. About turn it off and it was off only issue was when you brake. So that was why my first post was about being a bad Switch..
Then after I read again I thought I missed something and that you were saying even turning off it would turn back on.. So then that was why my second post Still thought bad switch lol... Sorry for the confusion.. Glad you found out the problem was the Switch..
About Replacing them.. I haven't had to replace one so I am not 100% sure.. I almost think the airbag might need to come out to get to the Controls. With any luck maybe the part on the back of the steering wheel comes off and your able to get to it from the back... maybe someone will chim in that has had to take one apart to either yard one out or because they had to replace theirs...
Let us know if you do it, Maybe take pictures for others that may need to do it..
James
