I have an 04 Impala with cracked block at the freeze plug. Keeping this as basic as I can. I replaced the plenum/gaskets/plugs/and a few other things. We get it put back together and start filling the radiator back up. Notice water pouring out of the back of the motor. Jack it back up and find the freeze plug blown out. The car sat over the winter because I couldn't afford to fix it. Motor was full of mixed antifreeze and oil from the intake gaskets being blown. Looking around the freeze plug hole we find the block has about an inch airline crack. 650 bucks in parts/labor a day later we find that the motor is junk. So finally a year later I get the money together to fix her. Not fixable......I just came across a wrecked 05 Grand Prix and was offered the motor for 350.00.
Here is about as much as I can tell..
Mine is a '04 Impala LS 3800 series II vin K. The '05 Grand Prix (not sure of anything else) has a 3800 series III.
Pretty sure the 2000-2005 Impalas never came with a series III, so I don't think it's a direct swap. I don't know just how much work it would be to upgrade the car to match the motor, but why not pick up an L36 or L67? Both of those engines were made for this gen of Impala, and they're not insanely expensive, either.
really the only thing is that you need to use the L36 fuel rail because the L26 is returnless. You can use the intake manifold, but you have to get a throttlebody adapter to mate the 36TB to the 26 UIM. That's because the L26 throttlebody is drive by wire and not useable on our cars.
Also, use the 36 injectors. 26 injector plugs are different. Plus they'd be lower pressure anyway.
Hey I wanna do an engine swop for my 04 impla ls what can I just put in there so I can get more power like a direct fit
