1984 caprice classic rag top issues...

OK here goes, I just bought a 1984 caprice classic with the rag top and I plan on fresh paint this winter and I know my rag top is doing okj condition wise but I am interested in removing the rag top and going with a steel top instead of the vinyl. My question is what lies beneath the vinyl, if i remove it will it look like a standard caprice or is there structural diferences I will need to account for like trim around the back glass or doors?? please help, I hope to have it in primer by the end of the month.

I have the vinyl top as well. The material is not that thick so the trim should be the same and there is no difference in the roof material. The vinyl top was an option that the dealer could install over the painted metal. You will find that you will need to remove the glue that was used to secure it to the metal.

85, do you have a factory vinyl top, or an aftermarket "simulated convertible" fabric top? Thats a whole different animal than a vinyl top. I responded to your other post about this, too.

Just checking.

It is i assume a factory top, but has been changed prior to my owning it the car was painted from brown to a sort of silvery tan color with a brown ish top so i would like to strip the paint and top and start over fresh with a burgandy wine color i found on a s10
