2010 Chevy Impala to be RWD, SS to have LS7?

I came across this from gminsidenews.com

Trim Levels

Base: LS
Mid-level: LT
Up-level: LTZ
Up-level: Impala SS

Introduction

With the Malibu and Caprice being positioned to fill the spot (and sales) held by the current FWD Impala, the next generation model is freed to move up market and onto the Zeta RWD platform. This allows for the car to draw on the heritage and goodwill of the Impala name by going retro in it's look and advertising. This car is squarely positioned to go head to head with the Chrysler 300C. It's big, bold and uniquely American. While this is an impractical approach to take for the whole Chevrolet lineup as some would like, we thought it suitable for the brand to have one large RWD sedan. That car is the Impala.

In the inside, a balance is struck between retro and modern. There's a metallic/black piano wood center stack with navigation and modern switchgear. The lighting color selected for this interior is cool blue and prominent throughout the interior. Thin blue LED light piping is found on the center stack and on the edges of the metallic door panel pulls. Some of the innovative things done here in this interior is the retro-style door/dash joining which echoes how it was done in the past, especially during the 1960's.

One of the concerns of a RWD Impala was CAF. A RWD Impala would get worse fuel economy numbers then the FWD model. Mileage is a now a very big factor in GM's new vehicle development programs, and this was a concern that had to be addressed. As such the Impala uses the Dual Mode hybrid system, mated to a detuned 3.6L 250HP HF V6/w Direct Injection. This will achieve some very good fuel economy numbers helping to offset the minimal increases by the other models in the line. The base model Impala, LS, starts at $29,450 and is powered by GM's 3.6L HF making 265HP. Moving up to the LTZ, you get the same engine, making 35 more HP. No Impala lineup would be complete without an outrageous SS model. And the Impala SS is that car, powered by the 7.0L 550HP LS7 V8 found in the C7 Corvette.

This car has been the subject of much internal debate at GM as to it's future. As well as in the minds of those on GMI, their future has been debated with much passion. Impala is certainly a car that (to a much lesser degree however) has an enthusiast base like the Camaro. Given this, we decided to make an compromise that would please fans, critics and mainstream consumers alike. Our Impala arrives in 2009 as a 2010 model, alongside the Aveo and Beat.

Of course this is just more speculation. Whether the 2010 Chevy Impala will be a FWD rebadge Holden, or a Zeta based cousin of the 2010 Camaro, it still remains to be determined. No one can be certain until we see an official press release. I rather see the RWD version, although I'm not too fond of the front end.

It looks half caddy half 300, but if they make it with over 500hp I'll gladly fork out the money for one!

It's not going to be made anytime soon. I remember reading about this. It was scrapped because it didn't meet the "fuel efficency" requirements.

ok, just to end all confusion on this:

There is not going to be a Zeta platform RWD impala. its been scrapped for a long time now. all your hopes and dreams are crushed.:frown: want RWD, buy a G8 or Camaro.

Rule #2: It's wrong to be French.

Sadly . . .this post reminds me of the below listed April Fools Day spoof I sufferred YEARS ago . . . still an entertaining read . . .we are forever hopeful

Hey guys, I just saw the following article in Automotive Design,
a trade rag for designers in the Auto industry. It looks like the
Impala SS production may come to life again!! This would be
awesome. I will keep an eye out for more info.

- ---------------------------------------------------------------------

Checker Rides Again!

Detroit- Checker Corporation plans to reenter the world of auto
manufacturing. General Motors ended production of full-size rear
wheel drive sedans late in 1996. The Chevrolet Caprice, one of these
now extinct autos, is greatly missed by police departments and taxi
operators alike. In fact, many police departments are hiring specialty
shops to rebuild police cruisers instead of purchasing the Ford Crown
Victoria, currently the only full-sized RWD alternative.
Checker Motors manufactured the Checker Marathon, essentially
a 1950s vintage auto, until 1978. It was used almost
exclusively for taxi service. Checker now plans to begin manufacture
of a Caprice clone. It will be essentially a rebadged Caprice, using
standard GM service parts, including engine and drivetrain. The only
item not in production today is the frame. Fisher Motors will resume
manufacture of the frames for use by Checker.
This trend is similar to that of several manufacturers of
clones of Harley Davidson motorcycles. The difference is that
these cars will not be in competition with similar products from
GM. In addition, this is being done with the blessings of GM.
Checker is in negotiation with GM to secure the right to
use the Biscayne name for the cars. This name was used in the
past on some full size Chevrolet cars. Chevrolet would not relinquish
the Caprice or Impala names, saving them for potential future use.
An interesting by product of this project is the plan to
also revive the Impala SS, a full size hot rod based on the Caprice.
It also was retired in 1996 with the Caprice. Checker will call
this the Biscayne SS, and include all the performance features included
in the Impala. In addition, Checker hinted at the use of the
hot version of the new LS1 engine, and an optional manual transmission.
The engine is purported to output 390 horsepower. Stay tuned for more
details.
