So basically, the only fix is either a rebuild or a new motor. That's what I needed to figure out.

1978 Caprice Classic Landau
350 2-bolt, stock 4bbl
Stock rebuilt TH350
Edelbrock performer cam + intake
Dual 2 1/2" Flowmaster exhuast (waiting to be installed)
Edelbrock IAS Classic shocks
95 9C1 3.08 posi
4 wheel disc brakes!
16x8 American Racing Baja's with 225/60/16 Pirelli P4's

Hang on I have to change my underwear... Okay, yeah that would be nice. Unfortunately a bottle of crap is about as far as my budget will take me right now. My goal is to eventually swap the engine and tranny as a unit to something far more modern, but that would cost me as much as a new car that I can't afford either...

Do a compression check and you may find your answer to the oil burning. Low compression in one or two cylinders indicates a tear down.
Compression check cheapest and most reliable source of info.

Check with your local jobber outlet, they often have tool rental plans that may not cost you for this diagnostic process.
