Blown head gasket???

Im freaking out because im thinking a got a blown head gasket and was hoping some of you guys could help me out. I noticed my coolant level was dropped in the reservoir so i topped that off and then today its already an inch lower and when running i see bubbles coming up in the reservoir tank. I was on an incline when i did that check so not sure if that has something to do with it. Ive looked all over and cant see any leaks only place i saw wetness was around the ac pump below the water pump but cant tell if its coming from the water pump. Theres no codes and im not overheating that ive seen but i also havent been driving it alot as its my wifes car. Didnt see any oil in the radiator and i just did an oil change couple weeks ago and the oil looked like typical dirty black oil.

Year, make, model, engine, mileage?

Bubbles in the coolant reservoir are a classic sign of an internal head gasket leak (vs. an external leak that can be seen).

2011 impala LT 3.5 150K i checked my oil today its no higher than it was a couple weeks ago when i changed it and it still looks like clean fresh oil no sign at all of milkiness at all. I watched in the coolant reservoir on level ground and some bubbles come up at first when i first start the car but then quickly go away and i let it run for like 10 minutes and didnt see anymore bubbles come up. So maybe its typical on startup for some air thats trapped to come up i do live on a hill so my car is always parked on an incline so dont know if that has anything to do with it. Coolant im gonna do a flush on because ive had it since 86,000 and never have.

May be a slow leak. Car that age could have a leak from the reservoir or a hose or somewhere else you may not see easily. Really probably best to pressure test the cooling system and see if you can pinpoint a leak.

My 6 year constantly asks why. What adults can learn from 5 and 6 year olds, to listen with your ears and mind open. Hard to learn when you don't listen ......

You can also get a block tester for around $35 from amazon.


It detects combustion bi-products (exhaust gas) in your coolant. It is pretty simple to use and a good way to check if you got a head gasket leak.

Iirc, you can rent those combustion gas detectors at parts stores with loan-a-tool programs.

The 3.5 and 3.9 engines have problems with leaking crossover pipe gaskets, that usually show up after 5 years or so. You would see some coolant residue on the right side of the engine above the water pump. When it happened to me on our '08 3.9, I could smell coolant when I started the car after it sat for about 1/2 an hour and cooled down about half way. I was adding about a cup of coolant every 3K miles oil change or so.

The crossover pipe is a flat looking aluminum casting that connects both heads on the passenger side of the engine.

I believe it is the crossover pipe because it is wet around that area. my tank has dropped about an inch and a half over 6 days so i would say thats a slow leak? Do you think i would make it ok till spring to replace the gaskets? Does anyone on here have a walkthrough?

If the leaky pipe is the only problem, and you keep putting more coolant in, waiting shouldn't be a problem.

Has anyone on here done this repair? Looking for a walkthrough guide or would i just be better off paying the $400 to have the dealer do it
