1999 Chevy Suburban 1500 LT

My mom has a 99 Suburban and she keeps having to get her flywheel and starter replaces about once a month. She notices itís starting to go out when her engine doesnít start it makes a whirring sound and then not too much time after that her starter goes out. Iím assuming the whirring is the flywheel messing up, which then kills the starter. But the starter and flywheel doesnít just go out for no reason. There has to be an underlying reason as to why they keep going out. Now, I live 600 miles away, so I wonít be able to try the things you guys say, but I can relay them to her. Iím trying to give you as much information as possible to help answer it, without you guys waiting on me to get back in touch with her to get the answers you guys are seeking to diagnose the problem.

Do they replace the flywheel every time? Iíve never heard of that.
Maybe they are replacing the starter instead of the flywheel and the flywheel is bad so itís taking out the starter gears.

I'm thinking you should call the repair shop and speak directly with them. They need to explain why they think the flywheels keep failing. Are the starters chewing up the flywheels? Are the starters properly aligned/shimmed?

Maybe your mom can scan and email you the receipts so you can see what was written in the paperwork.

The shop needs to explain what they were diagnosing each time and why the first fix(es) didn't work.

If your socket set is all the same brand, you might be a city slicker.

Agree with Doug. Get her to send you a detail of what the shop is doing and call and talk with them yourself. If they replaced the flywheel once and put in a new starter that should have solved ANY issues unless the work they did was no good or used used worn parts and/or they did not get the starter properly aligned which would be the shop's fault and they should repair free of charge if that were the case.

Hate to make assumptions or be ugly, but if what you say is accurate the shop may be taking advantage of your mother because they know she does not know anything about mechanics.

Oh I probably shouldíve mentioned that itís not a shop, my dad and his brother have been replacing the starter and flywheel. According to them thereís nothing wrong, she just needs to keep replacing the starter and flywheel. Her car broke down last night and started smoking she had to get it towed home.

Sorry, but have to ask are your mother and father married and on good terms? Makes no sense to have to change something if nothing is wrong.

Just a thought , has the vehicle ever been in an accident that could have bent things out of alignment ?

Ehh they are separated, and on decent terms. I mean I know he wouldnít sabotage her vehicle intentionally.

If there is still a problem with the starting system, your mom might want to get another opinion from a shop or reputable mechanic next time it messes up. No reason after the first time the flywheel and starter were changed that they should continue to need to be replaced. Especially not on a monthly basis.

Not saying your dad is screwing her over, but something there does not seem quite right.
