Amp install gone wrong 😞

Im in desperate need of some ideas guys. I had someone that was experienced in installing speakers and amps install a system in my 2015 impala. After install, car wouldnt start. The IP said i was out of gas and check engine light stayed on.
Everything else came on as normal, except the car would not start.
He grounded the amp to the metal under the trunk...which i feel was wrong because of it being a subframe vehicle, taped into the speaker in the passenger door, and remote wire was taped into the fan fuse under the hood. The dealership has had the car a month and replaced the BCM, but cant program it. Now...the IP, onstar and radio come on without the key in the ignition. I feel that is because of the bcm not being programed.
I miss my car...and dont need this to get any more expensive than it already is.
Help please???? Any ideas??

It sure sounds like *something* got shorted out when he installed the amp. Remote turn-on wire from a fan fuse under the hood? That seems a little strange to me (but then again, I'm not an audio professional, so maybe that is an accepted method?).

What do you mean by the dealership can't program the new BCM? It just won't take the programming?

Eletrical problems are a real nightmare (I guess I don't need to tell you that!)...

Hang in there - I can only image how frustrating this is for you...

Well Iím sorry I wasnít talking with you before you installed this. But I would first disconnect the amp. Starting with that fan wire.

Look really close where he ran the power wire thru the firewall. Did he accidentally cut into some factory wiring where the amp power wire and remote wire penetrate through?? If thatís what happened I donít want to have to be the guy that has to fix that but thatís my guess as to what your problem is.

Ground in trunk is fine. I put a 5k watt system and connected to the frame in the trunk and worked perfectly.

Iíd be pissed if an installer was Ďexperiencedí and did it the way he did it. The amplifier to the entire car. Is already in the trunk and you donít need to mess with the doors.

When a stereo is done right. No factory wires need to be Ďsplicedí at all. NOT ONE. They make adaptors that will simply plug in at factory locations at factory radio plug or factory amp (in your case would be in trunk by passenger side tail light). They can be pricey but rightly so. These cars are so computerized and the radio doesnít just play music anymore, itís the brain of the whole car. So special car needs to be made to not mess that up.

In the old days. Iíd spend $150-$250 on a new head unit, and just do the old fashioned stick in dash and run RCA wires to there.

To replace a head unit in my car now......means $500+ JUST to get the radio in and that does not include the radio. In the car audio world. You definitely get when you pay for. Goin cheep on the install.....this is the result.....along with Walmart splicing adaptors and wrong wires cut.


I honestly think thereís a short in the wiring for the bcm. And itís most likely cause by the installer accidentally cutting or Ďnippingí the wiring for that as he was putting this other stuff in.

I have had a lot of people pick on me because I take my sweet time when installing something in a car. Itís because Iím VERY careful to do it right.

To fix your issue.

Iíd take the car to a specialist shop. Not sure where youíre located but you need to locate a shop that specializes in wiring. Find a local muscle car shop. Since they tear down entire cars and redo them theyíd most likely know what to do here. Itís not gonna be cheap unfortunately. If by for some oddball reason youíre in Wisconsin close to milwaukee area I can recommend a place

Yep, gotta agree with the above that, sounds like the installer shorted something. Would be in question of just how experienced the installer is, and would have to ask if he takes responsibility/accountability for his work, is he licensed and insured. If this had been done at an established business, obviously they would have to pay for your damages.

Hope you are able to get it straight soon, and yeah keep us posted.

My 6 year constantly asks why. What adults can learn from 5 and 6 year olds, to listen with your ears and mind open. Hard to learn when you don't listen ......

Okay guys!! FINALLY figured out what it was... after running redundant wiring...which i suggested in the beginning and removing the power wire that was run thru the firewall....which i told them to remove on day one...
So...the issue was....when the power wire was pushed thru the fire wall grommet, it knicked a wire on the wiring harness and shorted out the BCM. $1300.00 later and my black beauty is home!

Ouch, that turned out to be quite a costly install. Glad to hear you got it straight and thanks for coming back and posting what the issue was, likely it will help someone in the future.

Iíd go after the installer for the bill on this. If not a possibility. Then make sure for now on, when u get a system done. That u take it to somewhere with insurance.

Itís a really unfortunate issue you had, and mistakes happen. Itís examples like this that make u realize HOW insanely important going to the pros is worth the extra $. And how important special care needs to be taken to install a sound system.

Iím glad for u itís fixed. In the 21 years Iíve been into this, that is my biggest fear is shorting out electronics in a car and take extra time and care not to have that happen.

To me, that is universally applicable advice. In my experience, there are two key ingredients to any project: 1) the design creativity and technical competence required to meet the goals and 2) the old-fashioned, boring rote part about double checking your work each step of the way and making sure you don't screw the pooch 'cause you got in a hurry and got careless. That applies to car repair, stereo installation, circuit board design, writing software, doing brain surgery, and cooking dinner (along with a million other things).
