2016 Impala, 3.6L, operating temperature

Hey guys, new to the forum, but on my second Impala (had a 2004 for nearly four years then upgraded to a 2016 this summer) but am having what I personally believe as well as mechanically inclined friends to believe is an issue.

Drove from my hometown down to Calgary (about 1200miles) this week and noticed in in-city traffic that my coolant temperature was getting into the 194*-203* range very quickly (up to last night, my temperature never exceeded 182*/185* before dropping). Got out in the parking lot, noticed no fans were spinning. Brought to a dealership and they said its fine, about 15min later while idling in a parking lot, it was at 210*. Only dropped as I drove back to the dealership and had cool air rush in but it struggled to drop and would increase again at a stop light.

Can anyone shed light on normal operating temperature? It has never gone this high until the other day and i have had it for over two months now, ~14000miles.

Ps: put everything in Fahrenheit and miles for simplicity

Seems normal to me. My 2012 3.6L LFX (same engine) gets over 200*F regularly when sitting idle or in traffic.

I've been sitting in my car for lunch. After 20 minutes it's at about 198 degrees. So 210 after driving should be reasonable.

I drove from Michigan to Florida and when i was in the Atlanta traffic my car got up to 205, usually stays at 181. I wouldn’t worry about it

many of the vehicles my family has owned have gotten above 200 degrees. had an 89 chevy truck with a 305 that would hit 212 after rodding on it. i believe i've seen a 350 get just as warm. depending on your thermostat setting it would not be uncommon to see if get to 205 i'd imagine (especially on a warm day in traffic or after running the rpm's high).

i did google the boiling point of a 50/50 mix of water/antifreeze, that came back as 223 degrees.

And just to say, our 2015 will also go up to 205 regularly under demanding conditions, such as miles of rather steep mountain roads. But as soon as the radiator fans kick into high gear, the temp drops down again. It never runs less than 180-something, which tells me it must have a 180 T-Stat in it. Actually I suspect this engine operates quite efficiently in the 200 degree range.

-that 223 is likely exactly right, but then you have to consider how much higher the boiling point rises under pressure. I wouldn't be surprised if that 50/50 mix under normal cooling system pressure, would be more like 250 degrees, or maybe even a little higher.

Have driven only large Chevys since 1978, Caprice, Impala SS, Impala LS and now a a 2017 Impala Premier, V6 VVT direct injection. Never have I had cooling issues until yesterday when the temp gauge, always 180 or less (even during our Miami summers) moved to 200. This morning it was fluctuating to 212. Went to dealer immediately. They laughed it off saying don't worry until it reaches 230. There were no warning signals going off when the reading hit 212. Seems to me to be a thermostat problem. Why is it suddenly fluctuating, now at 30,000 miles? Going to take it to a highly respected, independent mechanic for a second opinion.

Did you by chance turn off the A/C (or perhaps it got cold enough for the A/C to not run)? I've noticed with the A/C running (which seems to keep the fans on at low speed), the temp stays fairly stable in the 175 - 190 range. With the A/C off, it will run up to 210ish in no time until the fans kick in and drop it back to 180.
