2010 LS Trans Rebuild

Well took the 2010 into the shop and dropped it off Sunday night. got the call the clutches were the cause of a slip bump on take off not the solenoids. i think he said it was about $1595 for the complete trans rebuild. then while there i'm having them fix the rear main seal that is leaking oil (glad i didn't pay 650 a year or so ago to have them fix the rear main seal when the initially diagnosed it). they already repaired a water pump seal under warranty (they replaced the pump a year or two ago so i apparently had warranty on that part). another engine seal was leaking that he said he would just fix for free since he was doing the trans/rear main seals so that's a nice bonus. front main seal is weeping but at this time he said it wasn't really worth it to fix it as it was pretty minor.

so i'm guessing about 2k for everything which i suppose isn't too bad at all. i figured 2-2500 just for the trans rebuild alone. plus i'll have a year or two of warranty on the trans so that's a nice insurance plan to boot. 165k on the motor, and with this fix should help it last upwards of 200-250k miles easily in my mind.

guess i'm keeping the impala a few more years (i did just replace struts last year, new tires last year, new head lights last year lol). still cheaper than a car payment and the car really doesn't have any rust yet for being 8 years old (minor surface rust on the underside has started but i lived in michigan/indiana so that's expected).

this whole waiting game is killing me....i am tired of driving the wifes cruze....i want my impala back!!! the shop was hoping the trans would be rebuilt this week (i found out they have an outside guy do trans rebuilds so i'm guessing they just do the tear down and re-install).

2K to rebuild your tranny...Well IDK what you want to do, but I would honestly find a crashed Impala and cross your fingers the tranny isn't bad, and install it. Either on your own or have a shop do it for 500$. Thats me, but it seems like the pressure control solenoid is the issue and once there is damage its costly to fix. Common issue with these vehicles from 00-12. My current one slips into first from idle pretty bad. My 11 with 50K miles did it from day one from a rolling stop. My 04 with 3.8 at 160K did it from a stop. I had a 07 with 3.5 at 180K and it would do it from a stop too. My exp, everyones different. Never fixed any of them myself.

I explicitly asked about the solenoid, and the shop said it was the clutches. They will test them before putting it back together. I know this car and for the parts I've replaced and the maintenance I've put into this car the past 7 years, I'm sticking with it. Plus the 2k is a lot cheaper than another car, cause ill go 9th gen next time not another 8th gen. It has new struts, tires, brakes, and an upgraded stereo.

If get another trans from a junk yard you're right, it's a crap shoot. May be good for a minute might not be any good and I'm back where I started. I figure the car should now be good for another 3-4 years minimum, that 2k then pays off well.

picked up my car last night, drives well again. the funky shifting from 1-2 must be a learned thing in the tcm as it's kinda doing it again. haven't felt it slip on takeoff so that's nice.

couple of minor issues i need to call on monday about: windshield washer pump isn't working and the jug is full, i'm guessing something was left unplugged i'm sure he'll look at it for free. steering wheel is clocked slightly to the left and is annoying the crap out of me, at this point i'll pay the 50 bucks to fix the front wheel alignment to get rid of that steering wheel situation! Lol

i may be a little ocd about this car though...

I'm the same way - I can't stand it when the steering wheel isn't perfectly aligned! Drives me nuts!! :-)

What did you take the car in for (I must have missed that post)?

It was for the slip bump and oil leaks i had. Wound up being the clutches not solenoids. Had them fix main rear seal, did some front seal, water pump gasket, tpms in one tire, and oil change. Water pump seal and front engine seal were free apparently. At least now it wont leak on my garage floor lol

- I'm sorry - this entire thread is about what the issue was!! Not sure why I asked such a stupid question (I guess I was just tired). :-)

I agree though - you are better off putting $2k into a car that you know it's history than buying another car (where you don't know the history) or buying junkyard parts - which could land you in the exact same situation you started off with (after lots of time, work and $).

i have to say i'm loving not worrying whether or not the car is going to slip on takeoff! i generally ease off the line anyways and then get into it but sometimes i have to jump into it moderately on takeoff.

honestly it wasn't as expensive as i had feared, i had other things fixed while they had it torn down anyways.
