I LOVE my 2018 LT, but here's the thing...

One of its features has turned me into a scofflaw. When you come to a stop the engine shuts off to conserve gas. Thatís fine when youíre stuck at a traffic signal for two minutes. But I donít want my starter to have to engage at every stop sign I encounter - how long can a carís starter last if you have to use it 50 times per day rather than 4 or 5? So Iíve just been rolling through stop signs left and right and the habit is following me to every car I drive whether or not itís equipped with that feature! Maybe Iíll send my tickets to GM when they inevitably come... Which leads to my next thought: the government keeps upping the fleet fuel economy standards that manufacturers have to meet, which makes them try every trick in the book (and start creating new tricks) so they can obey the CAFE law. So their efforts to *not* break laws are leading directly to my need *to* break the law! I guess the only winner is government. And finally, Iím not one to complain without offering up a solution. Here it is: a little Override button on the shift lever or the steering wheel. The button tells the car ďCar? You listening to me? Donít go shutting down on me right now, ok? Iím just pausing briefly. Not staying here for any length of time.Ē Easy peasey. How do I get GM to incorporate my idea? Oh! Another silly thing! Sure, you can roll through a stop sign and therefore prevent the engine from shutting down, but you know what you *canít* do? Let the car keep rolling while you shift into reverse! So letís say I have to back into a parking space (which I have to do several times per day) - ordinarily Iím driving forward, bring the car to a stop, shift into reverse, back into my spot. NOT ANY MORE!!! Now I have to shift into NEUTRAL before the car stops rolling forward to prevent the engine shutting down in the middle of my maneuver!!!!! Stupid!!!!! #firstworldproblems

They should at the VERY least, incorporate some kind of delay so that the engine doesn't shut off unless you are stationary for like 20 or 30 seconds or something. That way, it shuts off if you are sitting at a long light or in stopped traffic, but not for a stop sign or during stop-and-go traffic. I thought that a lot of cars have a way to completely disable that "feature" as well, but I guess not all cars.... Would annoy me to no end though...

Some vehicles have a button to disable the auto stop feature for the key cycle but unfortunately most GM vehicles don't have them. I have found an easy to install device that disables the auto stop feature all together! I haven't used this product since none of my vehicles have this annoying feature so I cannot tell you exactly how well it works. Unfortunatly as I type this the module for the Impala is comming soon and not yet available. Hopefully it will come sooner than later.
Check it out and see how it works and pricing at: https://www.smartstopstart.com/

I've not driven an Impala with the stop start feature, but I have a 2017 F150 that does. With this truck there is a deactivate button, but I usually forget to use it until I come to the first stop. There is a short delay before it stops the engine. If I let up the pressure on the brake pedal to where it barely holds the truck from moving forward, it doesn't shut off. Try this with your Impala. I don't know why GM doesn't have a deactivate button like Ford does, other than it saves them a little money on each vehicle they build, and that adds up to millions of dollars per year.

We had a 2013 Malibu Eco that had the stop/start feature and it didn't bother us a bit. That's how it was made to work so we let it do it's thing. The cars that do this have a heavy duty starter, our Malibu Eco also had a small electric generator/motor that would kick the car into starting.
You should have seen the bitching and moaning on the Malibu forum, pretty comical reading. So many people complaining when researching a big purchase like a car and doing a good test drive would have prevented them from buying it in the first place.

Just let it do it's thing and stop worrying.

Never had that "feature" but it does sound annoying to me.

How long does it take start again before you can move?

I really don't mind the feature at all except for instances where it's completely absurd, as in when shifting into reverse!
