Saying goodbye

We're parting ways with both our 2002 Impalas this week. They've done fairly well for us, but they're no longer worth the effort to keep them going - they need too much work to get them thru state inspection, so I've called a car place that's coming to get them.

Besides having misfires that are costly to repair, both cars have been thru hail storms. For sure, the silver one looks like moon scape up close Both are still running, but I'm not up for a ring job (silver one, low compression on #1 or #2 , can't recall which). And, after recently doing some suspension and steering work on the white one, with all its other problems, I've decided I'm not going to put any more effort into it. Besides the p0305 misfire, it has lots of body damage thanks to my son, its primary driver. And I just can't see putting any more money into a 200 dollar car.

So we're getting rid of them. They've been mostly satisfying experiences. We bought the silver one new in 2002. It was a stripped down model, but still had a 6-way driver's seat, and it came with a combo cassette-CD player It has 220k miles on it now, and the white one was retired at 240k miles.

Along the way, I learned a lot about car repairs, having done lower intake gaskets (twice) and swapping transmissions (twice) in my driveway along with several brake jobs and strut jobs, just to name a few.

I still have two w-bodies left, my 2007 SS and a 2013 with the 3.6. And the SS needs work to get it going again. With these other two out of the way, it will hopefully get the attention it needs. The AFM hardware is clattering, but I feel confident I can repair it.

Anyway, I wanted to share a couple of going-away pics of two of the cars I've talked about here many times here.

If your socket set is all the same brand, you might be a city slicker.

^^Me too! For a minute there, I thought Doug was leaving us!

While it's sad when you have to move on from an old car (or cars in this case), sometimes, it's just not worth it to keep them going... But I'm glad that Doug bought a newer 8th gen and will be sticking around the forum - because we can't afford to lose a good member like him!

You know, when I was composing that, the ambiguity never occurred to me. Then, after it was posted, and I re-read it, I realized it could be misunderstood. Sorry about that But I'm flattered at your comments

I gotta say, I love driving the 2013 with the LFX - direct injection rocks!

But the LS4 still leaves the line with more authority. I got the battery charged today and moved it into the driveway so I can work on it. Even after all the AFM clatter dies down, after it's idled for a bit, I still have a ticking that sounds like a lifter. Right now, I've got my fingers crossed it's one of the AFM lifters. I need to read up some before I tear into it, but I'm hoping the cam shaft is OK and that it's just a matter of pulling the intake and swapping parts.

Disposal

The tow truck came today to haul them off. I got a whopping 415 dollars US for the pair. And that will just about cover what I put into the white one over the past year, trying to resurrect it. But I'm not complaining - I knew I might be throwing good money after bad when I started on it.

Now I can focus on getting my SS going again. I started reading up on the AFM system last night. It turns out, if I understand correctly, swapping lifters on the LS4 requires pulling the heads - OUCH! If I have to do that much work, I may as well remove the AFM system entirely, which requires swapping the cam, according to what I've read. That's a bit more project than I was thinking, but I'm game I can add a cam swap to my resume
