Putting on lots of miles

I recently bought a 04 Impala with 112,000 miles on it. I use it to commute 160 miles to work. I put on about 14,000 and it started having what I though was an overheating problem. I changed the thermostat and took out the air ant it worked fine for about 2 weeks. Then the temperature gauge started dancing again but with no heat from the heater core. When I open the hood I discovered the engine was not hot. So I though air or heater core again flushed the heater core and the intake. I used a clear hose when flushing and when I ran the engine I could see oil contamination. So my guess is I have to change the intake manifold gasket. Until I change the gasket this weekend.

My son bought a Grand Prix 3100 with a blown head gasket. and we changed the head gasket last weekend. We notice some sludge buildup. I decided research oil filters and there is some talk about wix and other filters on other threads but nothing about the far superior use of Oil Bypass Filter Systems.

I want to use my impala as a commute car for the next few years. I always use synthetic oil but it still gets dirty. Using a bypass system like frantz filters or amsoil I thing would be a way to prolong the life of the engine making it to 400,000 or more.

Any thoughts?

The temperature was making like a slow motion yoyo. I changed the radiator cap and it seem to fix the yoyo effect. After another three weeks of commute driving, I could see the temperature starting to go up a little higher each day. I took out some more air and it seemed to get a little worse. After some reading, I found that the Chevy dealer shop actually has seal tabs for the cooling system to address micro leaks and uses them for maintenance as well. I’m not sure how messy the tabs are to cleanup if it doesn’t stop the leaking. But I’m thinking I have a good candidate. So I’ve decided to give the seal tabs a try. The temperature seems to point to a leaking intake gasket or that I haven’t been able to get all the air out.

I am leary of putting stop leak into the cooling system verses changing the gaskets. However, I plan to keep the car up to date and modern with modes and when the engine and transmission fail, replace it. I have found there are a lot of this generation being resold on the used market for cheap so I’m thinking there’s lots of value. I weighing the pros and cons of remanufactured vs rebuilding myself. Buying a parts car and rebuilding the engine and transmission as spares for swapping.

Hi Ejratliff.

I read your 2 posts here, i was curious, how's it going with your Impala at this point?

I like the 04's. I know they came with a couple tricky issues but I've heard they actually can get lot of miles like you were saying you were hoping to get. Like 400k I think you were shooting for.

Good luck for sure. I'd love to get 400+ out of mine as well!
