Safety recall #14299

GM has sent out letters for a recall, it says parts are now available to repair vehicles, the defect relates to motor safety in your 2008 model year chevrolet impala.

the reason is key rings are adding weight to if your vehicle goes off road or experiences a jarring event, the key with the weight but cause the key to move away from the "run" position. If this occrus your engine power, power steering, and power braking will be affected, increasing chance of crash. If the ignition switch is not in the run position the airbags may not deploy.

so i'm guessing it's only this year model? yall should check it out, it says its a free service that should take no longer than 15 mins

This has been beat to death on other parts of the forum. Affects all w-body Impalas. It's just a little insert they glue into your key. Bullshit CYA stuff IMO. I didn't and will not get it done.

I just got this same notice for my 2013 Impala.
They are NOT replacing the ign. switch either just some insert in the
key or ign. slot as Rydslo posts above.

Hmmmm..........................

Anybody else get one?

Yep, got it for mine. Had it done, even though i only have my key and the fob on one set. My other set has the key, fob and the key to the lock on my locker at work on it. No excess weight on my keys or ignition anyway, but still better to be safe than sorry.

I like how GM is being sued for wrongfull death cases over this problem but yet the makers of those rediculous lanyards that all these dumb ass kids are hanging off their key has been overlooked. I cant keep track of how many cars I have gotten in and sat on the end of them and not able to start the car because my weight is pulling down on the keys.

^^I completely agree!! I've never had a GM vehicle just "shut off" while driving it and every vehicle I own has the so called "defective" ignition switches! It's probably because I don't put 15 pounds of other shit on my keychain! I honestly don't even believe that GM should be help liable for this issue - it's more of a common sense issue than a "defect" in my opinion.

Whoa !!

The springs in the lock mechanism were replaced with weaker ones to make it easier to turn the key. When the first cases of "shut off" occurred, 10 or so years ago, the engineer(s) who was involved replaced the springs with stiffer ones (in new production units) but then used the same part number for the new spring as for the old. This was a deliberate attempt to hide what was going on.

He needs a good @$$ whooping on principle !! And anyone else who was in on it.
...
I agree about the heavy key chains. I strongly encourage my family members - we have 4 W bodies, a G6 and a Cruze between us - to keep their key chains light. To aid in that, I gave them all EZ-disconnect key chains that allow the quick separation of the car key from the rest so that only the weight of the ring and snap-hook are on the key.

Maybe I didn't word that very well! :-) Of course, someone at GM royally screwed up and should not have done that, but I truly don't think that this "issue" *causes* accidents that cause death or injury. Now if you are in an accident and the car gets thrown around, then of course the ignition switch can turn and cause the car to shut off. But I think that more of a result of the accident, not the "defective" ignition switch. It just seems that people are trying to say that they had an accident and got injured because of the ignition switch. I think the ignition switch "issue" is the *result* of an accident, not the cause. Any ignition switch can turn because of an accident.

Or am I way off here??
