Ex-Smoker..1 Month
It may not seem like much to some, but after 40 years to quit (almost) cold turkey is something I never thought I could do. The diagnosis of lung cancer sure opens your eyes pretty quick.
I had to have a drainage tube installed June 1st in my left lung to drain fluid left over from pneumonia and while I was on the table the Surgeon also did a biopsy on 2 lymph nodes near my windpipe. I am still healing from that but the Surgeon said I did well. Friday, June 29, I go under the knife again to have the upper 1/3 of my right lung removed. I have been told that since the cancer did not spread I will not need chemo or radiation. But from what I have read the recovery time for this operation could be as long as 3 months. That is going to drive me nuts. I am not even supposed to drive while on narcotic pain killers. (oxycodone). I do enjoy reading and even now I go through about 4-5 novels a week. I hate daytime television. I think as soon as I am able I an going to start cleaning the house of 6 years of nicotine. Kathy stopped smoking at the same time so that will be the end of that. I was told I would be in the Hospital (Dartmouth-Hitchcock) for 4-5 days but there is WiFi available so I will able to check in here to see what's new. |

pkazsr, I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Good luck in the operation, and get well faster than they expect.

I am going to get my wife to read this post, in fact, I will print it and give it to her.
I fear she is heading in the same direction and it PISSES me off but I have said all that I can say to her. As for you ! (pkazsr ) Best of luck on your trip ahead. Like T said, perhaps you will get better faster because of a positive attitude. For reading novels Get a Kindle ! Best invention since the beer tap ,,,,,,,,actually since beer! Super easy to browse and look at books before you buy, loads through WiFi and cheaper than buying books in the store. ( there are lot's of free ones on there too ) Good Luck to you PS Want to clean smoking stuff from the walls/curtains/surfaces in your house ? TSP is the answer Buy it premixed for immediate use or the crystals and mix your own. Get it a Lowes or HD or wherever Nothing better for removing that stuff ( lot's of other things as well ) Paul |

Pkazsr, I have learned from my friend, who had mouth cancer, and his mother, who had lung cancer....that a positive attitude DOES help. Keep that positive attitude!!!

Congrats !!! Going on 7 weeks myself.
Hospital visit did it for me also. No cancer though. Good luck . At least your at a great hospital. I had the same pain killer and had no problem driving, just wait and see how it effects you.__________________ " The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. Update
Surgery was June 29th. When they opened me up the found more cancer that didn't show up on the scan. It has also found it's way into the chest wall. So they closed me up and I was home on the 1st.
Now the plan is chemo. That should start by the end of the month. There won't be a time line until they see how I react to the treatments. I had hope that I was going to get a second chance but now I am just going to make Kathy's and my life the best it can be for as long as I can. I'm not going down easy! |

Yeah keep on with the positive attitude. I don't smoke but my grandfather did and he had mouth cancer so he got his whole jaw taken out and they replaced it with a rib and after he had went through the radiation and chemo the radiation fried the bone so they then had to take out his shoulder blade and use that. And he didn't have to go to the radiation since that happened. But he is still alive today and doing well! Its been three years since then. So man you'll be in my prayer's too! Good luck to ya!!!
