Damn. Rotator-Cuff surgery needed....

Hello fellow Impala-Mates!

Had a near-fall on Christmas-Day! Caught my big slip by instinctively flinging my arms out to the side. Didn't wanna fall on my new Left knee (new parts/Ligaments installed 9/2014)!!! I'm 55 years young now...

BUT....I must've REALLY moved my right arm hard! Within a SECOND, I thought someone had shot me in the shoulder! Son-of-a-B*tch it hurt..... Wife & Daughter were coming home from walking the dog, & I'm standing on the driveway, leaning over with my hands on my knees, wondering wth happened! Next few days were pretty painful. Didn't get to Dr until the Tues after Xmas.

She suspected tears after the usual motion tests, but said they normally do PT first. Shoulder (specifically the shoulder-BLADE muscles) was getting stronger, but I knew something was still going on, so we scheduled an U/S scan for Feb 17. Like many geeks, I had been watching youtube vids on shoulder rehab, U/S scanning, etc.....

When I saw the 1st few seconds of the scanning, I knew it wasn't good! The scanner-guy kinda goes "Hmmmmm...". Uh-oh! Real rough looking images, and various areas that were black-blobs. Those meant fluid-filled areas that AREN'T supposed to be there lol! Diagnosis came back as "Full-thickness tear, etc......". SH*T.

The Ortho-Surgeon who did my knee doesn't live too far away from me, & we often see him walking their BIG dog (a beautiful Bernese Mtn dog). A few days after the scan, he leaves me a voicemail, informing me of the bad news....SURGERY.

So....anyone here been thru this?!??! Thanks for any info!

Have had rotator cuff issues, but fortunately not had to have surgery. Good luck with it.

My cousins husband had it done. When done, he felt great, but it takes time! Lots of therapy.... Hope it all comes out fine! Good luck!

Had issues when I was 45. One doctor told me I needed surgery and another said I didn't......based on the same radiology report. I chose surgeon #2 and Went an alternative route, cortisone and PT exercises, and that was 3 years ago (48 now). And I workout pretty hard and was back to lifting my max in about a year , and avoided the surgery. If you need it though, there is no getting around it......

I had an issue at 35 and it was crazy because I had seen a month before the Tear, a show about how they were going to do it. So I elected not to have it done even though the Doctor said that I had a body of a 70 year old, I was only giving a month of PT 2 times a week before my Insurance wouldn't cover it anymore. They would have paid for the Surgery however I elected not to, After 11 more months of 1 time a week PT out of my own pocket I felt much better. Now I will tell you this, If I could go back in time 17 years and even though I can't stand the idea how they did the Surgery back then. I would for sure have it done. The good news for you, Today's method is far less Barbaric with improved ways of doing things.

However for me there is no rewind and I must live with the pain 3/4 of the month. Crazy thing with me today. Both are bad and I don't have Insurance like I did back in the day or the money to make it better. That is why if I knew then that I would have to live everyday is such pain that I can't even do somethings that no other should have to do for me (I still do it, it just takes longer to do it) is why I wish I wouldn't have passed up in having it done.

I feel for you. Wish you a fast recovery

Shoulder(s) things happening now!

Revo & Co.,

Good Lord Revo! Any chance nowadays in revisiting your shoulder issue?!

This week, both my shoulders "get some action"!
* My partially-torn Left RC got the go-ahead for a Stem-Cell re-injection Study that Sanford is doing. So...this Thu the 16th, I have 3 appts....
* First- with the Research-Coord.
* Second- with a Plastic-Surgeon.
* 3rd appt is at the main downtown Fargo Sanford Hospital for a special "Higher-Def MRI".
* SO FAR....the actual abdominal-area "Stem-Cell removal & Left shoulder Re-injection" appt. is on 3/24.

For the "Surgery-required" full-tear Right shoulder, I see my Ortho-Surgeon on 3/21. Will be finding out when he can do the repair, types of repair, etc. This has been scheduled since early Feb. Been doing rehab since early Jan!!

Sooooooo....needless to say....I won't be doing much car polishing or waxing for a little bit LOL!!!

Very nice of you Sir James, & co.

Are you under the care of a Dr. for managing your pain? Not trying to pry, but I know it gets uncomfortable at times!
I'm lucky that I stumbled into this Study that Sanford is doing. Hopefully my own stem-cells can repair the partial-tear in my Left shoulder. They're paying for most of it.

As I mentioned, the Right shoulder needs the knife.....Frak.

No pain management besides me just living with it. I don't like drugs even ones from DR. For what ever reason anything I have tried for pain just makes me feel sick. So I would rather deal with the pain lol...

Had a couple Medical visits today....
1) First was with the Stem-Cell research-coord Lady. Signing consent forms, etc.
2) 2nd was with a PT-Lady, who took rom-tests, etc., of the partial-tear shoulder (my left one).
3) Tonite, I go get the first 3 (total, over the year study) "fancy" MRI's of the shoulder...b4 the stem-cells get injected in the near future.

Then, next Tues., it's seeing the surgeon about the right shoulder!
Uffda!

Good luck

Some things are better left unsaid, which I generally realize right after I have said them.

Uffda. Surgery date is 4/20!

Found out last Thur.
My Surgeon can work me in on April 20th. Right shoulder R-C, A/C Joint cleanup, & possible Bicep-Tendon move.
Mixed feelings! Wanna get it fixed.....but....it's a long rehab!

Then...found out I need the Left one done too! DAMN!
The 3T (3 Tesla) MRI I had last Wed nite revealed a larger tear (11mm, & real close to the bone) than the 2/17 Ultrasound scan showed. Was hoping this L shoulder tear could be fixed by the Stem-Cell trial I almost got into!! Surgeon said, so far, the biggest tissue-tear that current SC therapy seems to work with is 5mm.

Damn! So guess what!? I'm doing BOTH shoulders this year! Dear God......

Main reason: All the insurance co-pays, deductibles, etc., will be met soon. Therefore, the 2nd one will be "free", if done is the same year obviously. The 2nd one (Left) isn't nearly as bad obviously, but may as well do it since it'll be all covered.

Sheesh! Car care will be a little trickier this Spring/Summer!!

Glad your going to get it taken care of. 20th is a great day. I will keep you in my thoughts on my Birthday. Easy day to remember. Hope things go smooth and you have a fast recovery.

Doing both if needed you will thank yourself later in life.

Why thank you there Revo!

Happy Birthday in advance too!

You make a good point too. Doing them both this year will be a "pain" (both literally & figuratively, lol!), BUT, it's only for the good in coming years. Wise Man you are Sir!

Well, got-'er done!

Had a 5:45am check-in time at the Ortho Clinic/small surgery center. Was home by 10:30! It's nice....just happens to be a 5min drive from our house. Nerve-block still working, cuz my fingers are still tingly, like after a bad funny-bone hit! Like my total-knee in 9/14, I opted for the nerve-block & medium-sedation. Was "kind of awake" during parts of the procedure. Heard some Eagles songs, & recall an Elton-John song too. Also...there were a few "hammer taps" sometimes!

Seems to have gone well. He told my Wife it went fine. He did have to re-anchor the biceps tendon, which surprised me a little! We knew it would be a possibility. I was awake enough near the end, when they said they were taking all the pillows away, etc. Then I had to help move myself onto the raised chair to go to the lounging/care area. Soon got some toast, etc.

So weird with the shoulder nerve block! When they're "at" the nerve, your arm jumps! Didn't hurt at all, but having your arm twitch is strange! Later tonite, the block will be wearing off. Have already taken a small Oxycodone (5mg), which they stressed to start doing later, every 4hrs.

Took a while to write this.....pecking away with my Left hand!

Faron

PS: HAPPY BIRTHDAY Revo!!!!!!
