Start-Stop

Gonna get y'alls opinion on the new "Start-Stop" thing that seems to be arriving on more and more cars these days.

"What is stop start on a car?
In automobiles, a start-stop system or stop-start system automatically shuts down and restarts the internal combustion engine to reduce the amount of time the engine spends idling, thereby reducing fuel consumption and emissions. ... The engine restarts when the clutch is pressed prior to selecting a gear to move the car.
"

I voice my opinion first.

I F-----g H A T E I T ! ! ! !

It's bloody annoying and I can see no useful purpose for this other to to sell expensive starter motors in 2 yrs and to MAYBE save a teaspoon of gasoline on your drive home in order to appease the IPCC and the left leaning politicians and Prius drivers.

I have driven 3 vehicles equipped with this. 2 Chrysler ( durango and journey) and a Mercedes.

The new Chevy Cruze is equipped with this. I am led to believe that this will be more prevalent across more of GM's line in the coming years. Ford has it on a few of their vehicles as well as some of the Asian imports and a lot of the Euro stuff as well.

On Mercedes at least you can disable it by pressing the "eco" button on the dashboard. You have to press it each time you restart the vehicle but you can at least disable it.
The Chrysler vehicles you cannot. I spoke with a tech in one of their shops and he says they cannot disable it even with their "tech tool" ( which I find hard to believe ).
The GM salesman I spoke to ( if you can trust those types ) says that you cannot disable it on any of their vehicles that are equipped with it.
That "feature" would be a deal breaker for me.

If no one has driven a car that is equipped with this I encourage you to give it a try and give your opinion.

Pauly gives it 2 thumbs down.

Agreed. I hate it too.
At a stoplight I keep wondering why all these cars around me have to start their engines again after they die lol!
I've had a couple people asking me how to turn it off and obviously I couldn't find a way.
This is where I do not like the new technology coming in and not having a way to bypass it. User control is paramount.
And yeah, how much gas do you really save? Over a lifetime maybe, but I like hearing my engine rumble at idle....and it's going to stay that way!

I drove a 15 that my sister owned.. When I got there to help my sister that was out of town. She had instructions for me and said out of her cars I could only use the Impala lol... As much as I like the Impala I really wanted to drive her A6. She had the keys locked away lol... So I got in the Impala, Started it and looked over things. Set stereo, and adjusted seat, mirror and left the rest as it was... After a short warm up time, I left out her place in 2 min drive through Bellevue made it to the first red light about 3rd car back when the car Died on me, I was like OMG this is a new car, Shifted it to Park and the car started right back up on its own. I was like huh??? Tried to call my sister to find out what was going on, Left a mesasge, Until I made it out of town I kept shifting down before a stop and found it didn't shut off on me. I was on 405 in my way to Bellingham to pick up my Niece when the car died again... I didn't think it would do it on the freeway, so kept doing the shift down when coming to a stop.. Made it all the way to the Ferry in Bellingham, where i was little early so I got the manual to try and find out what I could do to not shift all the time to keep it from dying on me... I didn't find anything by the time her boat came in from Alaska. Niece showed me how to Change the HVAC controls to stop the car from turning off...

I thought it was a real PITA.... It didn't look like it really offered anything in the MPG ways for driving. I guess may be do to big car little motor.. Asked my sister after she called me back why she had bought this over the LT that had the V6 and she said she thought it may have been good for her long trips that she didn't want to drive her other cars. She did sell her Impala in 2016, When I asked her she said she liked the car, didn't really care for the stop start thing in the end and was not really her main reason to sale it. Main reason she said was her Audi was better on gas and started driving it more. Out of the 11 months she had her car she said besides the times I drove it she always left it in Eco mode trying to prove it was better. She told me even a couple of times it started on a slow roll after she didn't come to a stop. Always seemed to work good, didn't have any issues with the car. So starter lasted and so did her battery's. She said she also would elect not to buy another with stop start.

It isn't what you Drive that matters, It is how you drive it.

A real POS idea. Purposely spent the extra bucks to get the 2.0T without start/stop instead of the 1.5T with it in the '16 Malibu.

Same goes for that stupid keyless start button idea......a real PITA getting in and starting once the keyfob battery goes dead. And, and, and if your better half is the one with the fob and you switch drivers to let her out to go shopping taking it with her and you travel another 10 miles and then park and shut the car off.....there is no way to restart the damn thing without the fob

the wife's 11 cruze was in the shop last week and they gave her a 17 cruze. she hated that stop/start feature...i've seen it on the newer malibu's and had it shut off on me at a stop light as well in town. i think i read over the course of a year you only save a tank or two of gas for the stop/start feature. complete garbage and is a safety hazard.

if someone lost control at a light and you had to gun it to get out of the way, you could never move in time and would get hit. now i know that's a drastic example but use a little imagination of times you were stopped and had to suddenly move the car. it happens more than you realize.

I hate it. I have driven everything from a new 2017 Malibu LT with it to a $89k MSRP 2017 Cadillac CT6 Platinum 3.0TT with it. Fortunately, in the Cadillac, you can shut it off. Did I mention that I absolutely hate it? Oh yeah, also, I hate it.

Love the feature or hate it, with government CAFE averages getting tighter and tighter manufacturers will be putting technology like start/stop systems on cars for years to come. 1 or 2 mpg for you multiplied by thousands helps the manufacturers CAFE average.

True. At least they could provide a way of turning it off. It's just coding a little switch function in right? Not that hard.

If it shortens battery and starter life then it is bad for the environment not good.

I'm sure someone like Overkill could provide a tune that would disable the feature.

There is really no savings - what you save in fuel/emissions, you lose in needing replacement battery/starter.

Drivers are bad enough in some places, not immediately moving when the light changes because they're dicking around on their cell phones, this only adds to the delay.

1.5% more fuel burned or more manufacturing of lead-acid batteries? Which is worse for the environment? I really don't know, nor do I care. But when I slam the pedal coming off the line (to get around that rolling-roadblock SUV in the other lane that if I don't get out in front of I'll have to follow for 10 miles otherwise), I want BIG POWER NOW, not to have to wait for the engine to restart first.

So if my next car isn't a Tesla Model 3 (P if I can afford it) and still uses ICE technology, and has this bug (it's not a "feature")... it will be tune time.

There's definitely ability to disable it. As I mentioned, I have driven cars that have a disabled future, including a 2017 CT6. So, even if it is not offered from the manufacturer, I am confident that tuners can do it. Just like they were able to bypass the cylinder deactivation. Ironically, despite my complete disdain for autostop, I actually liked the cylinder deactivation on my 2009 SS. I'm in the minority by a long shot on that one.

Further off topic but on the topic of efficiency that isn't.....
The little turbo motors that wear out before the car/truck does are an ecological disaster too, WAY more energy and pollution involved in replacing/rebuilding a turbo and engine vs. fuel savings.

My 2015 Sports Sedan bone stock LS3 6speed automatic doesn't get any better mileage than my heavily modified 96 Caprice with 3800stall, 4L60E, and 4.10 rearend gears.
Now I will NOT claim that emissions are comparable, the Caprice cam had a lot of overlap which allows unburned fuel to get to the exhaust, but still it is wrong that these two vehicles get similar mileage, stock the 20year older Caprice with 2.93 gears a little heavier and tiny skinny tires(215 compared to the 245/275 on the SS) was only rated 4mpg higher on the highway. Government gets in the way of engineers actually solving problems.

I think some of the SS issue is the LS3 cylinder heads, just a giant hole and I think works poorly at low speeds, if you compare the LS6 to the LS3 the LS3 leaves you wondering why it makes so little power, makes 7-8% more power but has 20% more headflow, more compression, and 7-8% more displacement and the LS3 cam is based on a combination of LS6 lobes.......I didn't expect the SS to be a fuel economy car but it didn't have to be as bad as it is and I think the LS3 heads were allowed to be crap at low speeds because a 3000lbs Vette can't use the torque this should have made with a better head and might have been a warranty issue.
