I have a 71 impala 350, 2bbl, pretty much stock.
It's given me no problems, except minor obvious things to fix.
3 weeks ago it started running rough.
I set new points, new plugs wires, cap n rotor,
had the carb rebuilt, new fuel pump, coil.
yet the problem continues to get worse.
It was idling good a few days ago but when you drive it 30 seconds the problem comes back.
now it barely runs when you start it, does minor backfires thru the carb.
could it have something to do with the 1971 chevy transmission controlled spark?
Please give me ANY suggestions you can.
I love this car and it's driving me crazy.

Does your car have a catalytic converter? If so have it checked for possible clogging up.

Other wise your TCS system consists of the switch on the transmission, a coolant temp sensor, vacuum lines and the diaphragm in the distributor system (vacuum advance).
Check for vacuum leaks in this whole system. If the vacuum lines are good and the diaphragm is holding vacuum then I would replace both the TCS switch and the coolant temp sensor. Also check that the fuse to the TCS switch is functioning.

Thanks, I appreciate it.
As it turns out it was a comedy of errors. When I got my carb rebuilt I had to change out the metal fuel lines with rubber. The people at the auto parts store (oreillys) gave me fuel injection line instead which made the car run rough. then when i changed the plug wires (in a hurry) I crossed 2 of them.

How the hell does F.I. fuel line make a car run different than regular fuel line , only difference is the F.I. line can handle more pressure. Whoever told you that is full of shit.....now the plug wires....LOL....that I can believe, BTDT.

Yeah the fuel line was not the problem for the fuel injection hose can handle a lot more pressure than the carb hose. Other wise the two fuel lines are the same. I use F.I. hoses all the time on carb units with no problems.

Now the plug wires being crossed was the problem here.

Glad you got it fixed.
