Column shift question 73 impala

I have an issue with my column shifter, when I bought it for whatever reason the electronics are on off then the mechanics. When in park on the column the transmission is in park and the column and transmission always match properly. The electronics on the other hand do not, when in park my reverse lights are on and I can not start it, when in reverse I can crank it over and car thinks it's in neutral, so forth and so on. Where do I begin to look for the problem here. This is new to me, is it in the column or the transmission.

I cannot say with absolute certainty, but I believe the neutral safety (lock-out) switch is on the steering column above the driver's feet/legs. If you can get under there - you need to be kinda limber, and you need to remove some some trim pieces, as I recall - you should be able to find it, and adjust or maybe replace it. As I recall, the switch can be adjusted to correct for your issue, by shifting it sideways a bit.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure this is your issue.

I took a quick look at Oreilly Auto - they have this part for your 1973 Chevy

BTW, if you study the images, you may notice how the mounts are slotted to allow the unit to be rotated side-to-side a little to adjust it.

Perfect this is probably exactly my problem, so the column shifter hits the different plates as it shifts through the gears, if I have this right, and I should hopefully be able to just adjust to match actual position of shifter. Thanks a lot.
