7th gen ignition switch replacement/access

So maybe you need to replace your ignition switch, or maybe you just need to get to that pesky yellow wire for a passlock repair. Whatever your reason, here is how to get to the ignition switch.

First, you will need a 7mm socket and ratchet, a 10mm socket and ratchet, and a small flat blade screwdriver.

Remove the fuse panel covers on either end of the dash, and remove the 7mm screw on each end
Next, pop the plastic panel down below the dash on the driver side
Now more screws, 2 on the bottom
I only had one on the top here, looked like another was missing...
Then remove the 2 over the cluster here
If you have a column shift, block the wheels, turn on the key without starting the vehicle, and drop the selector all the way to L. If you have a console shift, don't worry about it. Now you can pull the center section of the dash out, start at one end and pry, it's held in with clips. Unplug the hazard switch when you have the room
Next remove the 4 10mm bolts holding the metal plate piece on
Remove the 7mm screws that are also holding it, then remove the plate. Now you can have full access to the switch
Remove the 10mm bolts, and pull the switch out from behind, and out where the metal plate was
Place the key in the ignition, turn it on, and press this button, then the lock cylinder will slide out of the switch
Now pinch these two tabs together and remove the small connector
Remove the two larger connectors, and the shift interlock mechanism

That's it, the switch is out. Just install everything in the reverse order and you are golden!

Something to note/add: When replacing an ignition you must "key" or place the tumblers in the cylinder matching the old one. Take the old one apart and assemble the new one piece by piece. Or bring it to a locksmith and save the headache.

Most people prob already know this MUST be done but, for those who do not, let's not mislead them. It is more than just replacing the ignition.

Only if you are doing something with the lock cylinder, this write-up is just for the switch.

^^ True but, why replace the switch and not the mechanical part that activates the switch? In my research I have found that the cylinder was part of the passlock culprit.

Thank you so much. i was having issues with my blower fan not working on any speed. If I jiggled the key or turned it past start the fan would kick on but stop again if i moved the key. Went to Autozone today and purchased the switch. It took me about 1 hour to do the job and the problem was solved. I called the local GM dealer today and they estimated $373.97 to replace the switch. The part cost me $87 plus tax.

what is the current mileage on your car? that you needed to change the switch?

Free Repair Of Ignition Switch

Thanks to the original poster Kingnutin.
I too had the inop heater blower etc problem in my 2000 Impy which had the temporary workaround of flicking the ignition key clockwise while the car was running. Eventually that was becoming a nuisance and I decided to follow the OP's instructions. In Canada there's no AutoZone and the dealer price for the switch was $224! and that only left the option of buying a used one from a wrecker's yard. I examined my switch and I found it easy to open by simply pressing in the plastic tabs. There are 5 sets of contacts within the switch and 3 of the sets were pitted, the set attached to the orange wire were in the worst condition. I cleaned and burnished all the contacts, reassembled the switch and reinstalled back into my Impy. That was some time ago and so far everything works fine.

This fix really works! My AC and overhead console quit working. Took the switch apart and cleaned the contacts, works perfectly now! Great info.....
