Leather shift lever installed!
As most of you know, the 2012 Impalas come with a leather covered shift lever. List price is about 75 bucks, but if you sweet talk your dealer parts departments, you can get it for cheaper. Mine was $49.00. PART #: 22773282 The install takes 60 seconds.
1. Shift the lever all the way towards you, towards the rear of the car, like you want to be in low gear. 2. Remove the one phillips head screw on the back side (dash side) of the lever. It is VERY short, so be careful not to lose it. See photos 1 and two - that is the screw! 3. Pull the old shift knob off. Push the new shift knob on 4. Tighten the phillips head screw. ![]() ![]() ![]() __________________ 09 Impala SS (sold 3/2012); 2001 Cadillac SLS ; 2010 Lincoln MKS AWD Ecoboost "Trying Times Are Not a Good Time To Quit Trying" Last edited by donmateo; 09-23-2011 at 03:30 PM.. |

Thanks! It feels just like the steering wheel leather. Not a huge mod, but fun nonetheless.

I read about it in NAIOA. Somebody did it over there. I have always thought that GM went cheap on that part. They could have just offered it on the LTZ and SS, but never did . Most cars 25K and above have leather handles. Now, even the most basic LS for 2012 gets the leather handle. When I used to go back and forth between our SLS and the SS, the SS handle always felt cheap and plasticy to me. Now they feel the same. 50 - 75 bucks was my breaking point though, I would not have spent any more than that.

Its not choco. LOL. It is black, the exact same leather and color as the black steering wheel leather. Black I tell you! :)
I dont know why it does not look black in the photos to everybody. It matches everything black in the car. Not even close to brown. Side by side, nobody would choose the hard plastic. Some might not think it is worth the money, I certainly understand that. But in person, nobody would think the hard plastic looks or feels better. __________________ 09 Impala SS (sold 3/2012); 2001 Cadillac SLS ; 2010 Lincoln MKS AWD Ecoboost "Trying Times Are Not a Good Time To Quit Trying" |

Yeah, maybe nobody else noticed it as much as me , but I don't remember the last car or truck I had that did not have a console leather shifter if it had a leather wrapped steering wheel. Actually I do. It was my 1992 Cherokee Laredo. Loved that thing. It had a leather wrapped wheel but a plastic shifter. Everything I have had since '92 , the wheel and shifter have matched. I know our 90's Lexus(94) and 90's Chrysler LHS' (94 and 99) also had leather wrapped shifters. The 09 SS surprised me. I certainly could have lived without it forever, but when they finally offered the shifter leather wrapped, as standard equipment, I knew I wanted to upgrade if the install was easy and was under 75 bucks. At 49 bucks , it was a no brainer.
