My girlfriend lost her key to her '06 impala so what she did was had the ignition cylinder taken out and replaced it with another one from another impala from the junkyard. Is there any to program this "new key" to this car? THANKS!BTW her vin starts with a 2.

If it's the actual key to start the car and it is what I think it is, you need to get a new one programmed from a dealer. After that, there should be a procedure in the hand book to program a second key if you get one.*

*disclaimer: this is based on past experience with a Ford Excursion. It is possible to use the factory key to program a second key to work with the truck, but you need a key that can start it. Based on what you said I think you need to get a new one from a dealer.

Yes dealership is your only choice. Sorry. Future reference if you take in proof of ownership to a GM Dealership they can make a new key based off VIN number back to 1990 except now that the lock cylinder is changed no go because it won't match. So hold onto the number or whatever it is gonna need to ID it.

Any good locksmith has the GM keys that they can cut for you. There is a way to program them which I forgot at the moment. I had to get another key made for my 07 SS since I only got one when I purchased it from the dealer.

IIRC: You turn the key to the accessory position 10 times or so(3 seconds between turns) to program it to the car.

Originate New Master Key
1. Insert new key into ignition cylinder and turn it to the ON (RUN) position.
The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten minutes.
equipment.
2. When the security light goes out, you have one minute to start the next step.
Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back to the ON (RUN) position.
The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten more minutes.
3. When the security light goes out, you have one minute to start the next step.
Turn the ignition cylinder to OFF and then back on the ON (RUN) position.
The security light on the dash will illuminate and stay on for ten more minutes.
4. After the security light has gone off the third time,
the key has been programmed into the vehicle’s computer and will operate the car.
It has replaced ALL the previous electronic key codes and is the ONLY key programmed into the vehicle’s computer.

Add Duplicate Key
1. Insert an existing key into the ignition cylinder.
2. Turn the ignition cylinder to ON (RUN) and back to OFF.
3. Remove the existing key and, within fifteen seconds, insert the new key and turn it to ON (RUN).
4. The security light will light up for two seconds to indicate success in programming the key into the vehicle.

this should work on 06-09 impalas. you can get a blank transponder key for about 15 bucks.
