Service Battery Charging System

My neighbor has a 06 Impala v6 (not sure of size). She came out and it would not start for her on Sunday. I checked it with my meter and it showed about 6 volts. I put a battery charger on it overnight but the battery was still not fully charged although the car did start now. When I checked with my meter while the car was running, I was getting 14 volts at the battery cables so I think the altenator was working correctly. They wanted to get a new battery, so we put a new battery in. Now the car starts fine but the dash shows a "service battery charging system" message and the battery symbol/light is on.

Also, possibly unrelated she told me, I have heard it too, that periodically there is a clicking noise (repeating) that comes from under the dash (passengers side) when she starts the car. It goes on for awhile and then stops. I found something on another forum that impies that this could be related to a "blend door" motor for the AC.

Does anyone have any insights on either of these issues? I am hoping that the "service battery charging system is just some sort computer reset type thing you have to do when you change a battery out.

Thanks...

Check out the post above to mak sure the battery was properly installed. The ticking, if its the ticking Im thinking of, is normal, and may go away once the car is warm. Try using a higher grade gasoline.

Thanks, I had read that thread before posting but it just shows what you need to do to swap out the battery. I have done all of that and it still shows service battery charging system on the dash.

The ticking is definitely not engine knock, it sounds like it is right behind the dashboard. The sound is a very loud clicking noise that repeats.

I would not worry about the ticking... it occurs on most chevys that I have encountered, but should go away after the car gets going a while.

As far as the code, I have no explanation for that. If it is out of warranty bring it to autozone (or wherever you bought the battery) and see if they can tell you anything.

Thank

more info:

The error light had not gone out (check battery charging system). So I took it to Auto Zone and they ran a check and battery and alternator is fine.

So when I got home I took the terminals off the battery and waited 15 minutes to clear the error code. I reconnected and tried to restart and now the battery error is gone and now it says "Traction Control Off" and it will not turn over at all. I repeated this process three times and still no ignition at all. LOL. One problem solved and another pops up. Any ideas of a reset or a secret fix?

Thanks

My parent's 09 impala is also having the same issue with the knocking under the dashboard and it happens every time you use the key remote unlock or when you start the car and when you shut off the car. Its pretty loud and apparent and does not go away after the car heats up.

Also when I took a first look at it I started and it wouldn't turn over. I had also got the "Service Battery Charging Systems" message so I put the battery charger on it overnight and took it for a ride the next morning I brought it back and put the charger on again and it was drained again.

Bad battery? or Bad Alt. ???

Also the Alternator is just on the other side of the firewall from the right side dash where the knocking is coming from. any ideas?

May need to have the ECM reprogrammed. power surge may have gummed it up.

Probably a Lil late on the post but I just bought an 08 impala ss and love it.. I had two issues the battery message and clicking noise under dash. Took it to dealership under warranty and they replaced ac door switch actuator or something like that. The noise is gone. As far as the battery error they said it was dirty terminals

Hope this helps

By the way this is my first post

Service Battery Charging System

I had this same message, took it and had battery replaced. Then one day car would turn on but not start. I jumbled with the cables on the battery and it started. I was fine a few days then it did it again. Fumbled with cables again and it worked. As of Sunday car turns on but it won't turn over to start now today dash says Service Battery Charging System! What is going on?

The battery cables are probably loose. Check their tightness. while you are their remove the cables from the battery and check them for corrosion, if some found scrub them terminals clean and then reinstall and tighten them down.
