New Impala Owner here

What's up everyone? Just bought my first Impala a few weeks ago. 2001 LS with 3.8 liter and only 22,000 original miles. I absolutely love the car. Drives and looks like it just came off the showroom floor, with exception to the trans. From what I read online seems like this is a very common problem, although not with such low mileage. Drives perfect in the morning, but after it warms up it has a slight slip between gear changes, until the PCM commands full line pressure. No check engine light and I haven't had it scanned, but I would assume a P1811 code is hiding in there somewhere. I was thinking of installing the transgo kit myself to see if it helps. With only 22k miles, I have no service history and for all I know it could be the original trans fluid and filter in there. Still looks red and doesn't smell burnt. I plan on dropping the pan and changing the fluid and filter along with the transgo kit and see what happens. What are your recommendations? Thanks everyone!

As for your transmission issue, let me consult somebody and get back to you on that.

Edit:

So, after speaking to a tech, he thinks maybe your seals are "unhappy". He recommended trying a transmission non slip fluid, like from Lucas. "Add it straight without removing any fluid and see what happens. It should cause the seals to swell and help coat the bands a little more to prevent slippage."

Thanks for the quick response. I will have to give that a try. I find it hard to believe that there is anything wrong with the trans itself with such low mileage, but I suppose internal seals could be due to age alone. I suspected the pressure control solenoid being the culprit, which from what I read online almost everyone with this trans has to replace at some point. I will get some pics posted up later today. I will give the stop slip a try and report back this weekend. Like I said it shifts beautifully first thing in the morning, then slowly begins to develop a slip between 1-2 and 2-3 gear changes. I don't notice it on the 3-4 shift. After the PCM detects the slip, it commands full line pressure to help save the trans from what I read online. After that happens, no more slips it just shifts rough.

Welcome to the Forum and sounds like a Nice car. It maybe that there was a issue with the Trans and the person that Owned it all these years just let it sit for the lack of funds to repair or replace. Maybe even could have been other reason where the person was out of the country or... Welll it is hard to say.

It would be interesting for sure to have a very LOW mile car this many years later. For me I would just get it into a Transmission Shop and have them repair the issue. Once done it would be a very nice NEW old stock car that I am sure would turn heads like it just drove off the show room floor for some years to come...

Can't wait to see some Pictures for sure...

Where did you find it? It's a beauty for sure.
Even though it has such low miles, I would change every single fluid in that car. The fluids are likely 17 years old, with the exception of the oil. Coolant, transmission, brake, etc. I am just guessing that those are 22000 stop and go non highway miles.

I lost my father a few years back and I inherited taking care of two othet vehicles other than my own. I ended up purchasing an OBD II code diagnostic reader that is Bluetooth enabled to work with an app called Torque (on Google play for a one-time payment of $4.99) or any app that can link to and read from that reader. This one specifically has all the GM features for diagnostic situations. Search for "OBDLink MX Bluetooth" on Amazon. Had an asking price of $79.99, I think.

that back seat literally looks like no one has ever touched it...EVER....lol awesome find...take lots of pics now, after some daily driving and a few dings you'll be crying about how new it looked when you got it. i'm a little paranoid, i'd probably look into replacing the fluids to ensure everything was on the up and up.

Yeah I plan on changing fluids. Already did coolant, hoses and tstat. Next on the list is trans and filter, and brake fluid. I just came across it online at a small used car dealership here in Phoenix where I live. I was searching the internet for a cheap daily driver and this came up. I was very surprised as well at the miles. You are correct, the back seat literally looks like no one has ever been back there.

I would also look at the date code on those tires. They might be the stock tires, so 17 years old. That rubber would be pretty hard/brittle and I would recommend replacing them if they are that old, even if they have decent tread.

Excellent idea! Make sure if you get one, you are getting the OBD Link MX and not an ELM327 OBDII reader. The ELM chipsets are barely above junk.
