Center Console Trim Removal

New member, here, and the proud owner of a newly-acquired 2000 Silver Sled. Former Old Man's car. Got her out of an estate. Great shape. Well cared for. Maintenance taken care of regularly (sometimes a little TOO regularly), and priced very right. Just taking care of some of the small details, and outfitting her out for my daily use. Noticed an issue that I figured I'd best ask for help solving: Top face of console is a piece of black trim that goes from the cubby under the heater controls, back to the shift lever. Shifter sticks through it, and it houses the ashtray/lighter and the PRND321 indicators. I noticed that the front of the trim is not clipped under the edge of the cubby, and, as such, sort of flops around loose up there. I can feel what appear to be two plastic 'hooks' under the leading edge of the trim, but don't want to break anything by trying to force them under the lip of the cubby. The question is this: Does this trim piece just snap out and back in from the top? Or do I have to remove the entire console and work it from the bottom? I'm hoping that the it comes off from the top, as the ashtray and indicator lamps both will need replacing eventually...and I can't imagine the engineers designing it to make that task impossible. Any help and hints would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Forum
Have a few Impalas and a couple still from your Gen of Car....
The console is made of 3 major parts.
1. The top of the center console (this is from the ashtray to the cup holders, the black area (including the area around the shift )) and the cup holder section are all one piece.
2. The storage area under the A/C controls.
Lastly 3. The lower half of the console, including the armrest storage area.

So on area 1, There are 4 areas of Clips that are holding on the Top part. Starting with the area next to the ash tray, then back by the back of the ashtray, then back of the shifter and the last clips are going to the compartment in the center.

If the problem is after this part. Then there are some clips on the right and left of CC that need to be removed and under the bottom of the cubby is 2 7mm screws at the right and left area. with the clips on the side removed by pushing in the little button in the center and pulling out the clip. Once out just push the button though to the front to install them back when ready and put the button to where it is flush with the Con...

That will give you total access to that area. Maybe take a picture and show where the problem issue is...

Your welcome, I am glad I was able to help... I have a couple of these cars and have had to take out my CC when I installed my Aftermarket head unit to mount the extra hardware for the unit.

I am sure if you have other problems or questions there are others that are also more then willing to help when needed.

James
