.02 Foolish me, why didn't I think of that? I remember, that's why I wasted 10 whole minutes prying off the gold emblem first and then using the screwdriver to pry the exposed backing plate (one way locking) retention tabs to release the emblem backing plate from the grille without damaging the retention slots in the grille. And yes, the old emblem was damaged which I probably might have sold for $15 bucks on EBay.......but not the grille!......figured it was easier to sacrifice the old emblem retention tabs and glued on gold bowtie than compromising the retaining slots in the $400 grille.

Go slow mo on the video and you'll see that strong arming it off did save the old bowtie intact ......but you can see by pausing at 0:51 in the video that the edges of the 4 softer plastic retention slots in the grille had been deformed by yanking on the locking plastic retention tabs on the old emblem. The formerly sharp edges of the slots that engaged the emblem locking tabs is now rounded and pulled forward. Now the new black one is susceptible to being pulled off (or fall off ) much easier.

And as an aside..........I did make the same mistake of putting a black bowtie on my siren red tintcoat Traverse. They look great on my blue velvet Impala, tungsten Silverado and silver Malibu, but in retrospect the OEM gold looks better on red vehicles.

Finally someone made a video of the bowtie removal on a newer Impala.
The body shop told me they just squeezed the clips in back and it popped off on ours.

Let's see some pics of it on your car now hisstory

That's an awesome video. Thank you for doing that. If I knew was that easy, I would've done that to my in-laws impala, versus plasti dip.

Just did this to mine as well, friend of mine works installing GM accessories, and he got me a set of black bow ties, installed both in about 2 mins.

My question is how can i get the gold bow ties on the wheel center caps to be black with out messing them up. anyone know where to buy them
