can i run car with this broken hose?

i took out my airbox to check if my headlight was still secure as i have constant headlight issues. sure enough it was not.

but in the process i noticed this broken. i had heard something even before this so i dont think i directly caused it to break this time but i def made it worse.

i'm assuming it's just a dealer item and its a holiday weekend..sigh...where the screwdriver is the bellow is very broken down in there. you cannot see it at all in the pic

You run the risk of drawing dirt into the engine, and also contaminating the MAF sensor. You may be able to remove it, wash it good and dry it, then apply some duct tape or similar strong sealing tape to prevent the air bypass. You could also use some high temperature sealeant such as a tube of silicone (but it takes 24 hours to dry).

What year model is this? 9th gen? I've seen them broken, but usually on older cars (such as my 99 Lumina, for which replacements were not to be found). I'm surprised to see one this worn on a 9th gen. Do you have any warranty left?

As for a dealer item, yes, probably only dealer, or junk yard. That said, if you can get one at the dealer, get it while the gettin' is good

BTW, keep an eye on this after you let anyone service the car. Part of the reason these things tear is because they get handled roughly. I know, on my Lumina, I would very gingerly handle it when I was connecting/disconnecting it at the MAF. It was one of those fittings where it had to be stretched over the opening, and then had to be pried off when removed. And where the prying forces are applied is critical to avoid stressing it in the wrong spot.

Doug

I seem to remember hearing about someone else with a 9th gen having this issue too - I wonder if it's design flaw with that hose...

2014 per my sig.

i probably did it myself because this is the 2nd headlight i lost. put it in a few months ago and wanted to see if it fell out yet. i'm sure is in tight but keeps coming out. sigh. so this hose has taken more a beating than it should and why i try to be careful i guess i wasnt. maybe twisted too hard. wont do that again.

Garage
Gorilla tape it with several wraps as tight as you can until you can get a replacement. May try ebay.

tomorrow will be duct tape day. ive been possibly running like this for a while. would this cause anything like weird braking or lack of power?

dealer has in stock..165 but said i can have 115.how nice

so that or 83 and wait a week for shipping on ebay one state away.

also he said somethign about new style vs old style and needed my vin but i assume he meant old style limited or cop car ones

edit: strangely enough the dealers site lists it for 103 if i buy it on there. hmmm 20 bucks.tough call.

can i run this a week with duct tape. saving 20 bucks would be nice but i drive 140 miles a day

Personally, I'd pay the extra $20, get it done today and be done with it. While you'd most likely be fine running a week with the duct tape, for $20 why risk it. With mailorder, there is always the risk of delayed shipments, wrong item being shipped, etc (so the potential is there for even more delays).

Really, you should have no issues changing an air intake hose, even when the engine is hot. you shouldn't need to come in contact with anything that is really hot...

i just pulled my car out and back in the garage this weekend to do oil and burned my wrist when getting the filter back on..so yea, i can burn myself quite easily from just 30 seconds of running the engine lol
i guess i have to be more careful and pry the assembly off instead of twisting it when i have to put in my next headlight

I had a tear in the air hose after only 6 months in my 2015. I was checking oil level between oil changes and noticed it. Must be a material defect. The dealer replaced it because it was under the bumper to bumper. That was two years ago. Only thing I can think of is it tore when the dealer changed the oil. They usually check the filter. I have never seen this happen before and either did the mechanic at the dealership. My guess it was part of a batch of bad rubber. I work for a company that makes rubber and plastic parts and things like this are usually due to bad material. You can drive with it but like someone mentioned above, dirt can get in so get it changed out ASAP.
