Anyone install a hot button for camera activation?

For like parking,, a momentary activation switch, to activate the camera at any time? When the wife pulls in a spot, forward, She will put it in reverse to see if she's in far enough.

A lil button to activate the camera would be helpful.

Possible wired in under the shifter handle area?

I love the idea. I often do the same thing as your wife. Would be a great modification.

I've thought about it. I added a radio with camera display to my truck. The unit is triggered to display the camera when the backup lights on the truck come on (ie, when it's in reverse). I've considered adding a push-button signal in parallel, but it can get fairly involved quickly. For example, you probably want the camera to stay on a few seconds (or longer) after you release the button. My (theoretical) solution to keeping it on was to use a small microcontroller to monitor the button and keep the camera on for a few seconds after releasing the button. But I've never gotten past that stage. (The advantage of a micro is that, as more is learned about the application, the code can be progressively tweaked to enhance the behavior, such as making it turn off sooner, or later, or staying on if you tap the button three times in a row.)

The other thing that might be necessary is to couple the button into the reverse lights so that either of them can turn on the camera. That requires a little electronics knowledge - usually a couple of 5 cent diodes are needed for the hookup.

Anyway, the key to starting such a project is to determine how your existing system is triggered. What prompts the head unit to begin displaying the camera instead of the radio info? Once you know what the definitive event is, then you go about emulating it. For example, it may be that, when you put the car in reverse, the transmission sends that status info to the BCM which in turn tells the radio to display the camera. So it might be that the pushbotton would need to cause a message to be sent on the CAN bus or on the J1850 bus or some other data link in the car. (And, at that point, it's more than most folks want to mess with, including tech guys.)

If I could find some electrical drawings (and shop manual info) for a 2014 , I could probably figure out how it works, and what sort of additional hookup is needed. It may be as simple as adding a wire and pushbutton, but it may also be a lot more complex with a factory radio setup.

No doubt, with an after market radio that triggers off the reverse lights, it's a comparatively simple hookup.

What I would love to have is a camera in front. Our Impala sits so low it can scrape on curbs sometimes. If I could see up front then I'd know I was pulled in far enough and not going to scrape.

Advanced Safety pkg
Sunroof
Suntek CXP 50/35 tint

Sent from my custom made computer with Gigabyte Z97X Gaming 5 MB, 4790k cpu, 16gb 2400 DDR3 ram, Nvidia GTX 960, 500gb Samsung SSD using a keyboard to type the response and a mouse to click the submit button.

That might be a good application for the side looking sensors used in the collision avoidance systems. Take one and mount it facing down, or angled down, situated as far forward as possible, and have the system apply some brake before you tear your air dam off on the curb

Have considered doing a camera setup for our impala both front and rear facing.

Here recently have had more and more issues with dangerous tailgaters, especially around the high school with young kids, more often girls than boys. Don't know what it is with them, but wife had one(high school girl) pass her in a blind curve just last week that had been so close to her bumper beofe the kid passed her that she was afraid to hit the brakes when a car in front of her was slowing to turn. Sad reality is that over the past 10 years or so have been multiple kids die within just a few miles of the school for careless avoidable accidents and that type behavior is exactly what gets people killed. Would sure be handy to be able to snap some stills and get a plate shot as they pass in those type situations.
