Alot of newer cars tell you to change oil and not filter every time now. My Honda minivan does that, if I took it to the dealer then that is all they would do. Why, that is all the car is telling them to do. I change the oil myself and it get's a new filter every time. I agree with Impala-427, oil and no filter is a bad idea. I'm not starting anything, but I would stray away from fram oil filters IMO.
I have done every one of my oil changes in my 14 Impala and it takes 6 Quarts exactly with filter change. I doubt that the filter can hold much more than a quarter of a quart.
I wish the oil companies would start selling 6 quart containers of oil instead of just 5 quart containers. Having to buy that one extra quart in a single bottle pretty much kills the savings from buying a 5 quart container, that extra quart always cost more by the quart. Many cars these days take more than 5 quarts.

6 1/2. That is what our local dealer has always put in. If you notice in the user manual. It says 6 quarts is the estimate.
All capacities are approximate. When adding, be sure to fill to the approximate level, as recommended in this
manual. Recheck fluid level after filling.
Can you post a link to where GM is saying the LFX is 5.5 quarts? It says 6 quarts in my 2012 owners manual - and every time I change my oil, it takes *exactly* 6 quarts. If the dealership is putting 6.5 quarts it, then they are overfilling it.
JT is correct, I looked at the OM for the 2015 and it does say 6 QTS. Here is the link to the GM pressroom where it says 5.5 though: Chevrolet Pressroom - United States - Impala
Hmm - that's strange. Maybe the pressroom is the capacity without oil filter? I guess an oil filter could hold about 1/2 quart....
I used to buy the 5qt. jug and an extra quart, but then just bought an extra 5 qt. jug - that way, I just buy (1) 5qt jug when it's oil change time and get the other quart from the "extra" 5 qt. jug. They just charge way too much for the single quart containers!
I'm thinking the same. Sounds like it could be anywhere from 5.5 to 6 either way. I would buy 6, fill 5, check the oil and top off as needed. Bet the owner's manual is correct, but better to be safe than sorry in this case.
EDIT: I just reread the post from JT, go his route for the buying of oil as it would be cheaper in the long run for you.
all the mobil 1 5 gallon things have lines on the side. i've always bought them at walmart really cheap and gotten some rebates even. so pouring out just 1 extra qt is not the end of the world.
I changed my oil on my "16 LTZ last week with Mobil 1 Synthetic, and it used 6 quarts exactly. I like to change my oil with the engine warm, and I did manage to burn my wrist a little removing the oil filter @ BobX2 comment.
I don't get what all the fuss is about changing oil and oil filters on these engines. We do it all day long on how and cold engines. no long sleeves, no arm supports of any kind. But we do use the right tools for the job! It is about working smarter...not harder. Sometimes you just gotta bite the bullet and spend a lil extra if you wanna do jobs by yourself. Tools are made and designed to make life easier for techs. But I assure the tools we'll use are not high dollar tools needed to change oil.
Not sure if the 9th gens are very different from the 8th gens (2012+ with 3.6L), but with the 8th gens, I don't even see how you could burn yourself when changing the oil filter! I'm assuming the 9th gens are setup differently though? @SinisterRogue - what kind of "tools" are you referring to?

Did my oil change. Damn is that filter close to the exhaust! Seems best to remove it from the top and replace it from the bottom. I dropped it trying from the top.
So I was leary of the full 6 quarts so I put 5.5 ran it hot and checked it after it sat a while. Now the manual shows your standard hash marks like this llllllllllllll on the dipstick, but mine looks like this llllll...... llllll.
WTH, why the seperation? anyway the level was between the hash marks. I figured it would take the other half quart so i put it in, but now it's just a hair over the top hash mark. worth draining? I figure it's probably fine.
On a side note, I did my wife's ford edge also, she used to drive 70ish miles a day but new job is only 10, realized she had only 4,000 miles since last time i changed it, almost a year ago. It takes 5.5 quarts, only 4 came out. oops
Agreed, even the 2.5 filter sits between the block and the exhaust. Only about 90 degree opening for a filter wrench. I have one that will do multiple angles and it was a little on the tough side to get the tension and have enough to swing it.
To sinister: are you on lift? or laying on your back in the drive way?
Pat
It's a mix of 50/50 whether we're on a lift or not. Typically, a lift is gonna offer convenience, the ability to stand and work under than laying on one's back.
not worth draining that oil mentioned above. it burns it in my experience. i really have never looked after filling with 6 but i drive so much it probably doesnt matter
i made the effort to check over the weekend before i drained it . 8000 miles and it was down to the fill line. truth is i'm glad it burns it. my drain pan is near the top full when i drain it and if there were 6 qt in the pan id have to buy a bigger pan. sigh.
and people who complain about our filter should try some other cars. like 99 saturn. not too fun
I have no complaints about the oil change procedure of these cars. For those who change their oil with a heated engine, that exhaust just creates more awareness when removing the filter. I burned my wrist being too careless. Worst oil change I have ever done was on a 2008 (if I remember correctly) Audi A4, just because I had to remove the bottom splash guard to gain access to filter and drain plug. Complete PITA....
I see several posts about how easy this filter is to change on the Gen8/9 V6... My Gen8 and now Gen9 (just bought but haven't changed the oil yet) are a PIA to change the filter. I don't get burned, but that little POS metal tray that is supposed to direct oil downward is directly above several things that oil isn't supposed to be on. After many rube Goldberg fabrications, I settled it by putting a 1 gallon ziplock bag over the filter all the way to the block, then loosening the filter and letting it and the oil fall into the bag. That way I keep the POS tray and everything else oil free. This has to be done after the block and CAT are cooled off.
If you aren't having this issue, I'm at a loss.

I agree, on my gen7 (2002) Impala with the 3.4L motor (LA1), the oil filter is at an angle and there's no way to avoid some spillage (which I duly clean up, every time, albeit cussing as I go).
But on my newer motors (LS4 and LZ4), the filter is vertical, and I am able to remove them with minimal spilling. But, even on the vertical filters, some oil drains out from the top when the filter is being unscrewed, and that has to be dealt with. That is, a little bit of spillage is still unavoidable even on those motors.
I had my Oil Changed in the winter so I went to a local shop instead of the dealer and they charged me extra because their coupon was for 5 qt and my V6 takes 6 qt. So to answer your question, 6 qt.
