In order for people to help you, as it posted in this forum, you MUST tell us a few things:

WHAT KIND of vehicle.
WHAT YEAR.
WHAT ENGINE SIZE.
AUTO/MANUAL TRANS (sometimes makes a diff)

These basic things are needed to answer your question. Otherwise people with not answer at all or they may answer with questions regarding your honda or yugo

That is a warranty issue.

That is a warranty item. Have the dealer replace it at their cost. If that dealer won't then try a different dealer. If you are not able to get this doen please let us know. All emission system coponets are warranted usually for the life of the powertrain warranty.

EGR Location 2006-2008

Just so you know, the EGR valve is located in the rear of the car bolted to the body, near the fuel fill and has a vent hose leading to the tank. You need to get under the car to get at it. If you are getting a Check Fuel Cap message on your message display even after checking the fuel cap, it is probably the EGR that is stuck open. When this component fails there is no way to fix it and it must be replaced. It looks like the part can be disassembled, but it is hemetically sealed and will be destroyed if you try to crack it opened.

good thread - thanks - I know it's old - but it confirms what I was told by our mechanic for our kids 2003 Impala about the check-engine-light. I changed one of these on an older 4Runner once and it was no big deal - but this one seems to be a different animal. the drag is our mechanic said he would replace it, then we have to drive it around for a few days, then he has to re-scan it and then take it for an inspection

2003 will either be a 3.4L (Base model) or the 3.8L engine and slightly different than any of the 8th gen series engines. I had a 3.4L 2001 Impala with CEL on and I never did do the swap as the gas mileage was acceptable and it passed inspection without doing it. There is a discussion I found on the particular error code I had and removing and cleaning for the 7th gen engine.

thank you RShea. yeah it's the 3.4 6cyl. I found a nice youtube video on the topic as well. in my state, with this model year, I have to resolve the CEL

In Massachusetts if your car is a 1995 or older it is not required to pass an emissions test. Car
1996 or newer must pass an OBD II emissions test. Basically the inspection machine reads any
trouble codes from your cars computer, if there is a trouble code in most cases your car will fail.
Here are some tips to avoid failing this portion of the test.

1. If for any reason you disconnect your car battery or your battery goes dead, do not go in
for an inspection until you have driven the car at least a week or 200 miles.

When your car battery goes dead, or is disconnected your cars computer codes will be erased.
This is an automatic emissions failure, as the computer needs to reset.

2. Never try to take power from the OBD II plug to power a stereo.

This will prevent the OBD II plug from communicating with the inspection computer and it will
fail the test.

3. If your check engine light is on, you will fail the emissions test.

Your check engine light turns on when there is a code in your cars computer. If this yellow light
is on your car will fail the emissions test. When you bring your car in for an oil change have
your repairer fix the emissions problem. Make sure you drive the car for at least a week or 200
miles as after a computer repair is done.
