can you replace keyless remote with alarm remote?
So my daughter is down to one keyless remote and because the drivers door was replaced the key no longer opens the lock. She is leaving cross country early tomorrow. Can I buy a universal Viper alarm remote from best buy and will the car learn it like a factory remote or do you need the whole alarm system installed to control it with their remotes?

It's not likely that the Viper will be compatible with the OE system.
GM remotes are pretty inexpensive, and if you have a neighbor that has a car with the same remote you can perhaps borrow it, re-learn it to your car, and then give it back when your daughter returns Perhaps P Just had a thought. Perhaps drop by a car rental place that rents GM cars. Tell them your problem Perhaps, ( just perhaps ) they will give you a remote for one of their impalas. ( They will have multiple sets of keys there, perhaps even some spares from wrecks, mechanical break downs etc. ) Take it, re-learn it to your car and on Monday get a new one and take it to the rental place. |

Why didn't the lock get swapped when the door was replaced? It isn't that hard. Unless you can find a factory remote, you're probably SOL, and you may be even if you do, since the RKE modules and lock actuators aren't the most reliable either. It's only a matter of time before you get locked out by it. If you can't get the old lock, I would get a locksmith to make a new key.
