new key and fob

I just purchased this used car from a chevy dealer. It only came with 1 key/fob set. They tried to contact the previous owner, but they didn't have the second set.

How much would a dealer charge for a new key & Fob? Do I have any alternatives?

Love this thing.

I could be wrong, but I think you can just get a new key cut at any keyshop that cuts keys for cars... I dont THINK there is any micro chip involved.

In terms of a FOB, you can get a used one pretty cheap, but any FOB your buy will have to be programmed. Im not sure if its something that can be programmed yourself or not.. someone else may know.

Shop around here for a bit. I bought one for my car. I have a 2000 Impala, and it had no key fob when I bought it. They are very cheap, and your cars manaul should have how to do that, or it may come with instructions....

Edit...Sorry, forgot the link....

06+ can be easily programmed yourself (fob) using the dic. Key needs to be dealer programmed or some hardware stores also now have the ability. The keys are PK3. Meaning they need programming. Alfredo, you had it exactly backwards. Lol.

Had the same issue - needed additional keysets. Found several places offering - chose Car keys - Remote Keyless Entry Fob Replacement Car Fobs

The fob was programmed through the DIC menu.

The key was cut by a local lockshop and is easily programmed in if you have a good key - have to insert the good key, roll to ON, wait about 2-3 seconds, pull out, and insert new key and roll to ON quickly.

Same with me when I got my SS. I had one key and 2 fobs. Went to my local locksmith and they cut me a key for $30. It does have the chip BUT it is in the top of the key behind the black plastic. I have seen some places charge upwards of $60 for a key.

Its easy to program and there is a writeup on this forum about it. Takes no time to do.
