8th Gen audio question
I recently bought some goodies to add some better sound to my new 09 LT, and after talking with Best Buy installers, getting quotes, etc, I scheduled to have the install done.
I don't have the time, and am just lazy during the winter...... ![]() So we settle on what materials i need to get: LC7i audio processor (to keep factory deck) Alpine 12" Type R Alpine MRP-1000 - for type R Alpine MRP-300 - for the factory fronts and rears many feet of 0 gauge and 2 gauge power wire power distribution block 3 sets of Monster Cable RCA cables Fuses So after having purchased all this, and having my car in their install bay a *few* times, I show up at my appointment, and the installer looks in the truck at one of the factory speakers. He then begins to explain that the factory speakers are 8-Ohm, thus requiring me to purchase new speakers, since standard car audio is all based on 4-Ohm speakers. So I'm a little more than pissed off that he A. is retarded and somehow didn't see this on one of the previous 3 trips, or B. is an jerk, and is just trying to get me to buy crap that I don't really need... I have done many car installs over the years, but never once, have I come across a mobile audio system based on 8-Ohm speakers..... Now somebody told me it could be a Bose system, but i thought those only came on the cars equipped with the OnStar feature? Is this the standard for GM now? I did get under there and look, and the magnet of the factory 6x9 is stamped 8-Ohm.... I wasn't quite ready to dump another $300-400 for front and rear speakers just yet... Any input is appreciated. __________________ ![]() 2008 Impala SS MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust JL Audio components up front 15" Kicker L7 in the back Alpine MRP-F300 & Alpine MRP-1000 for power Audio Controls LC7 to make it all work! |

Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding the question. From what I understand you want to use the Alpine amp on the factory speakers? and you have already verified that your speakers are 8 ohm, but the guy is telling you theyre 4? is that right? also I dont think you need any 0 guage for 1300 watts. i may be wrong though, but i know 0awg is pretty costly, and not worth it if you dont need it

ohhh is he saying the Alpine amp wont work with 8 ohm speakers? if thats the case I would look up the specs on the amp. mrp m300 is probably 300rms at 4ohms, just guessing. and are you using the mrp-m1000 for just one type r?

I was curious if all the new impalas run 8-ohm based audio, and whether or not using my alpine MRP-300 with the 8-ohm speakers will trash it? Yes, i am running the single Type-R off the monoblock MRP-1000.
I am using 0 and 2 Gauge power becuase I plan on adding a second MRP-300 to bridge them both. one for fronts and one for rears. I am looking at the type-r component 6.5 speakers for the fronts, and those will eat up a MRP-300 bridged by themselves ![]() I actually saved a bundle by purchasing my power wire from a welding shop, Pure copper, high strand count and heavy duty insulation make this wire a great choice for running audio component power. Purchasing all this, was cheaper than buying 4 & 8gauge from the audio supply stores :) If running those 8-ohm speakers from my 4-ohm designed amp wont hurt anything, then I will just continue with my current plan. Otherwise, looks like i'm waiting till I purchase new front and rear speakers.... __________________ ![]() 2008 Impala SS MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust JL Audio components up front 15" Kicker L7 in the back Alpine MRP-F300 & Alpine MRP-1000 for power Audio Controls LC7 to make it all work! |

wow thats pretty cool about the wire. is it the newest type r thats 600 rms or the older one thats 500 rms? 4ohms dvc right? i wouldnt put 100rms to a 5 or 600 watt sub. and for the amp, no it wont hurt anything but the higher impedence will lessen the output of the amp significantly

its the previous generation, according to what i have read online. The type-R is 4ohm DVC and is supposedly 600watt RMS. The amp puts out 1000 RMS, but I don't have to turn the gain all the way up... :) This just gives me room to add another type-r in the future.
I would rather have more than enough power and turn down the gain, then not have enough and be banging out massive distortion. Well, maybe i will just install everything the way it is, then add the new speakers when i have a little extra cash. __________________ ![]() 2008 Impala SS MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust JL Audio components up front 15" Kicker L7 in the back Alpine MRP-F300 & Alpine MRP-1000 for power Audio Controls LC7 to make it all work! |
