Agreed - there is no specific mode switch for the heater - just simply adjust the fan speed and move the temperature sliders towards hot.... That is the heater.
even on my 2010 there isn't an on/off for the heater. seems this system is always moving some kind of air in or around the car. i just turn off the fan and turn the heat selector to coldest setting for "off".
By default, the system enables the "outside air" mode so that outside air is always flowing through the car. You can put the car in recirculation mode with the button to the right of the temperature controls, which disables "outside air" mode (button/light to the left of the temperature contols) and enables "recirculation" mode (button/light to the right of the temperature controls). Only one mode can be active. Re-circulation mode is good if you don't want ANY fresh air to enter the cabin (keep smells out, cool air faster in A/C mode, etc).
