Might buy 05' LS trim for my son

Hello proud impala owners. I have registerd so that I can get some feedback on a possible impala purchase for my 16 year old son. Even if we don't get this one I"m sure the impala will be his next vehicle because that is what his mind is set on. I bought him a 06' Dodge Stratus SXT this past Feb' but after driving it for a view months he did not like it. It was a good reliable car but no power, no options but that's another story. He and my wife convinced me to sell it and I did so now we are in the market for a 02' - 05' Impala LS. We found this one and have been talking with the dealer about it. It is very clean. It has a few little nicks here and there but that's to be expected for a vehicle seven years old. It runs real good. Brand new tires. You can see the asking price on the link. I have them down at $5600 out the door and that includes 5% sales tax, their outrages doc fees of $294 and title. Unfortunately there is no warranty. I've driven it twice but my question is what else should I look for. What concerns should I have if any? Thanks in advance.

The biggest thing I would be concerned about with it is the transmission.

here are some common problems they have just make sure it doesn't seem like any of these are going on

4T65E Common Problems

I would also check to coolant and make sure it doesn't look like a milkshake. LIM gaskets are a common failure as well. Other than that there isn't too many major problems I would worry about. Most of the things are pretty simple an inexpensive to fix.

The motors are built like tanks..downside is that the transmissions are not. With the 3800 you don't have to worry about head gaskets like you do on the 3400.

Thanks for that information. My brother has an 03 Impala 3.4 and he's had the issues with the gaskets and his transmission. Both are fixed now. But he also has put close to 300k miles on it as well. I took it for a 2 mile test drive when I first saw it and it drove just as smooth as could be. No issues that I noticed. The dealer called a couple days later to see if I was interested and I asked them if I could come get it and bring it home to let my wife see it also to drop by dad's house and let him take a look. Plus I wanted to get a better test drive and really take my time and look it over. They agreed. The second test drive went smooth also minus one small cliche. When I first got in while at the dealer I went to move the car so another customer could get out. When I put it gear it rev'd slightly as if I had mistakenly put it in neutral. It didn't knock or hard shift or anything but just rev'd up for a split second then went. I couldn't duplicate the problem afterwards. I pulled the tranny dip stick while at was at my father's house. Neither he or I thought it was red as it could've been. So I mentioned it to the dealer and that said that they would check it out. I was thinking maybe a tranny flush is needed but after reading some your concerns on this site about tranny flushs I'm thinking maybe just a tranny fluid change is needed. My son loves the car. It's what he's always wanted but that's my only concern. Do you think offering $5300 out the door is a good enough discount from the original asking price of $5983? We looked at several other impalas this weekend and the ones we saw in that year and price range weren't as nice as this one. We saw a nice black 05' LS with 109K miles but they wanted $9k.

I paid 11k for my 2004 with 15k on it 4 years ago. Given 4 years ago and way less mileage I would say $4500 is a more reasonable price. Then again maybe I got a deal.

Edit: I looked at the pictures and honestly, I would pay $6000 for it. Then again I love my impalas so I am a bit biased...

Don't do a trans flush. The dealer is going to tell you to do one most likely, I would simply change the filter and fluid when you get it home. Then you won't have any problems with it.

I don't think its a terrible asking price. I would talk them as low as you can, but anything under 6g is reasonable to me. I would try and get them to 5500 if you can, but that's your call.

If you do ever have problems with it once you buy it, the forum is always here. lol
