Removing engine from '03 Impala

Has anyone removed the engine from the FWD Impalas? I'm looking a pulling the blown 3.4 from a 2003.
Pull it from the top? With/without trans? Pull it from bottom?
Any advice or input would be fantastic. I've done many RWD vehicle engine pulls, but never attempted the FWD.
Thanks!

IMO
remove the hood, and pull w/ trans thru top...
The books say to drop the cradle, but unless you have a hoist, the top is easier.
I can get a 3.8 out in about 2-3hrs ;)

How tough is it to pull the axles/CV joints?

I don't know if there's a way of doing it without separating the ball-joints, but that's the most difficult part.

That should be no biggie, just make sure you have a large enough socket, I think 19mm.

DONT TOUCH THE BALL JOINTS
remove the 2 bolts for the strut, that will give you PLENTY of room to work

But pull it from the top? Don't attempt to drop the cradle?

you can remove the cradle if its easier for you, but even if you do i dont think you need to mess w/ the ball joints.. I found it easier to pull thru the top even when i had access to a lift, but thats just me

In the future I will try the strut bolts, the ball joints are a total bitch. Thanks for that one DLS.

thanks guys. If the hurricane doesn't wash-out the w/e, I will start pulling that baby tonight. I have a salvage engine sitting on the floor ready to jump in between the fender wells.
I'll let you know how it went.

NP, you COULD always just drop the struts w/the cradle and undo the 3x 13 (or are they 15mm) nuts in the engine bay, but for getting axles out, i just pull the 2x 21mm(IIRC) strut bolts

Did it

Well, I dropped the cradle out of the bottom after all. Mainly because the engine was seized and I couldn't rotate it in order to remove the torque converter bolts. It really wasn't that bad, even doing it all alone. I removed the strut nut a the top, but should've compressed the springs as well. Also, I should've restrained the rotors..... in order to prevent the CV joint from separating at the boot near the transaxle.
Anyway, thanks for all the input. Now to get all that junk back in place.
